Deadline for Iraqi Constitution Passed with NO Constitution
It's a test for the Bush administration. It's a test for the Republicans. It's a test for Americans all across the fruited plain.

Americans not known for their patience.

Including The Wise I.

As I understand it, the Iraqi "constitutional committee" was unable to resolve several very important issues by their deadline. Issues such as the treatment of women, the division of the country's oil wealth and the role of Islam in the new Iraqi government.

Well damn, all these weeks and yes, these are pretty substantial issues.

Myself is beginning to get a bit antsy over Iraq. I would have been comforted had a proper constitution been drafted as was the plan by yesterday's date.

The Iraqi General Assembly can grant the committee more time to come up with a constitution. The Iraqi General Assembly can over-ride the committee's result and fill in the blanks themselves. The Iraqi General Assembly can dissolve itself and allow a whole nother Assembly to be elected.

Yesterday they granted the constitutional committee another week.

It was probably a wise move. Condaleeza Rice was out and about, declaring the Assembly's decision a good one. I trust this Secretary of State.

I don't trust that Arab cesspool in the Middle East. I don't trust the sons of camels, thieves and thugs, all desperately trying to hold onto their precious oil money and the power that commands. I don't trust that Sunni faction in Iraq, Sunnis who supported Saddam and were part of his reign of terror.

For now, I will be patient.

Two things. Next week-if there is another extension, The Wise I isn't going to buy it. I shall be demanding America pull out of Iraq with the vengeance of Cindy Sheehan. Not that my demands mean all that much but hey, they are as valuable as Cindy Sheehan's.

If that constitution writing cadre come up with a constitution that fails to give Muslim women equal rights, same thing. In other words, if the Iraqi women are relegated back to the Burqua, if their husbands are allowed to divorce them by saying 'I divorce you' three times, if their husbands are allowed to marry twenty to thirty women, if they cannot vote or cannot drive... whatever, then this American woman just ain't going to buy it.

We shall see.
