Those Strange Airplane Crashes
Yesterday a plane carrying mostly French Vacationers crashed in Venezuela. It appears that this may be a case of catastrophic engine failure.

From the NY Times:
The plane, an MD-82 made by McDonnell Douglas and operated by West Caribbean Airways of Colombia, was carrying French vacationers to Martinique from Panama when the pilots reported engine problems to Venezuelan air-traffic controllers at 3:07 a.m., the authorities in Venezuela said. Ten minutes later, the controllers lost radio contact.

The plane crashed in the Sierra de Perija mountain range just inside Venezuela's rugged northwestern border with Colombia, Venezuela's interior minister, Jesse Chacon, said. The remains of the plane were spread across a wide swath not far from the town of Machiques, which is about 90 miles southwest of Maracaibo, Venezuela's second-largest city.

It is the Greek airplane crash on Monday that is still a puzzlement.

This plane was allegedly on cruise control for over an hour. Greek fighter planes sent up allege that people were seen in the cockpit, evidently trying to take control of the airplane.

The original pilot scheduled to fly the plane refused. A last-minute German pilot was put in place. His body has not been found.

The flight voice recorder has not been found. Its casing has been found, but no recorder.

The home of the missing German pilot has been roped off by German police.

It appears that the Greek airline suffered a major loss of cabin pressure. From my reading, the normal action to take when this occurs is for the pilot to bring the airplane down to a lower altitude so breathing is possible. In the case of the Greek crash, it would appear the loss of pressure occurred so suddenly that the pilot did not have enough time to bring the plane down to a lower, safer altitude. Indeed, it happened so suddenly that there was no chance to turn off the auto-pilot.

But who were those people in the cockpit allegedly observed by the Greek fighter planes? By all accounts NO ONE should have been alive on that airplane by the time the fighter planes got beside the plane.

And what about this Greek person who asserted that he'd received a text message from a cousin on the plane. The cousin text-messaged that everyone was frozen on the plane and that the pilots were passed out in the cockpit.

I myself heard this with my own ears within minutes of the crash.

This fellow has been placed under arrest for making a false report. Still, even if it was a lie, how could he have been so close on the money about things going on in that airplane? Rescuers hadn't even gotten to the wreckage when this was bandied about!

Let us not forget that plane crash in Toronto last week in which FOUR of the escape hatches didn't work. Fortunately everyone on board escaped so this little factoid will remain under the radar.

No, I don't think these crashes were acts of terrorism.

At least not yet.

But there's a lot of questions needing serious answers.
