Listening In On the Local Government
I took the bait and listened in over the Net on a Sussex County Council session.
The link to this broadcast is Sussexcounty.net Broadcast HERE.
Yon readers should check your own local government web site to see if such a thing is also offered. After all, Delaware still has 7-digit phone numbers and if they can offer this here it should be available across the land.
I was, in fact, pleasantly surprised.
First, the agenda is posted on the Council's web site and this helps to follow the action.

Pursuant to 29 Del.C. § (e) (5) this Agenda was posted on April 18, 2006, at
4:50 p.m., at the time when the Agenda was prepared by the County
Administrator.
I posted the full agenda for the meeting on 4/25/06 just to show how mundane the minutiae with which the local government must deal with.
And yet, I was spellbound. Not that I understood a thing going on but I suppose that comes with time. I was intrigued by item 6 right under the picture. I wonder what the hell "Quick Chicks" are and further, as an adult-education instructor in the Indian River school district, why I wasn't invited.
While I listened in on almost two full hours of this meeting, at one point the council adjourned into what they called an "executive session". Said session not being broadcast to the public and I suggest that is the purpose.
For now, let me say that I was very impressed, to my surprise, at how professional and detailed the county council elected leaders were to the task at hand. The session was not without some adversarial argument, but it was civil and resolved by a final vote.
I've learned a little something by this experience. I've learned that government does start at a local level and that it's quite revealing.
Check out and see if your local government has such a public broadcast. You might be surprised too.
