Quote of the Day
COULTERGEIST

"However the Duke lacrosse rape case turns out, one lesson that absolutely will not be learned is this: You can severely reduce your chances of having a false accusation of rape leveled against you if you don't hire strange women to come to your house and take their clothes off for money. Also, you can severely reduce your chances of being raped if you do not go to strange men's houses and take your clothes off for money. (Does anyone else detect a common thread here?)

"And if you are a girl in Aruba or New York City, among the best ways to avoid being the victim of a horrible crime is to not get drunk in public or go off in a car with men you just met. While we're on the subject of things every 5-year-old should know, I also recommend against dousing yourself in gasoline and striking a match."

This Tragedy Knows No Bounds

Hornbeck It's difficult to grasp the beginning of this story but the tragic end is known.

A young soldier, Robert Hornbeck, age 23, returned from a year long tour of Iraq in January of this year. He traveled to Savannah, Ga. to visit his father and stepmother for the Easter holiday. During his visit, he and an army buddy had a night out on the town.

How Hornbeck ended up in Savannah's DeSoto Hilton hotel is not at all that clear but the hotel declares that Robert was not a guest at the hotel.

Hornbeck and his buddy were, however, at the hotel and it could have been a stop during their drinking foray. At some point, Hornbeck's drinking buddy got concerned enough to call Robert's father and ask him to come pick up Robert.

Robert's father drove to pick up his son and while the drinking buddy was ready and waiting, they couldn't find Hornbeck. At one point Robert called his father from his cell phone and told his father that he was "on the stairs".

The cell phone clicked off and for two weeks after, nobody knew what happened to Robert Hornbeck. It was as if he vanished into thin air, this shortly after speaking to his father via cell phone.

From Fox News.com:
- A Fort Benning soldier missing 12 days before his body was discovered in a downtown hotel died after he got caught in an industrial-sized air conditioner, officials said Saturday.

That's right, Robert Hornbeck was found 12 days later, dead in the air conditioner unit at the DeSoto Hilton hotel.

I've seen these huge air conditioners on the roofs of some buildings and I imagine it was such a great big thing that in the case of the DeSoto Hilton, was housed in some sort of building deep within the bowels of the ediface.

Robert Hornbeck had been on the stairs and at some point, in a deeply inebriated state, he turned the door knob of the wrong room. Said room being the housing for the air conditioner and those things do have huge fans. Robert evidently was confused as to his location and somehow, some drunken way, got caught in the air conditioner unit, perhaps that big fan, and cut himself bad enough to bleed to death.

The tragedy is that perhaps Robert could have been saved. One would think that the hotel would have been the object of a thorough search and I do understand search dogs were brought in.

He survived Iraq for a year and met his fate on a drunken night after a bout with an industrial air conditioner. When he phoned his father about his locale, he was likely only minutes away.

12 days later he was found mangled in the air conditioner, this only after guests complained of the foul odor emanating from the duct system.

There are no words ...

Another Tragedy

Only this time the perpetrator, a lovely man who is the stepfather of the bride, will spend some time in jail thinking about the consequences of acting like an asshole.

Weddings with stepmothers and stepfathers are often uncomfortable affairs. Most times the stepparents behave and the parents get to see their child's wedding as past animosities are put aside for the happy couple.

Only this fellow, one Eric Adams, was so annoyed at the delay in the reception festivities that his complaints were evidently not met kindly by the bride's father, Rick Diamond Sr. and his son, Rick Diamond Jr. These two were the father and brother of the bride.

From NBC4i:
RAYMOND, Ohio -- A man who was growing impatient about the cake-cutting at a wedding reception allegedly stabbed the bride's father and brother Saturday afternoon.

The bride is postponing her honeymoon to be with her brother and father as they recover. The sweet Eric Adams will be in jail where he belongs. The link above includes a video tape of the reportage with an interview of the bride's sister.

Killed by the Man Living in the Closet

The murder of Jeff Freeman was covered on this blog HERE and HERE.

This was a strange crime wherein the murderer of Mr. Freeman was allegedly an amour of Freeman's wife who was living in the home's closet!

This email came into my Ebox, evidently from a friend of Jeff Freeman. Freeman was bludgeoned to death in his own bathroom while his wife was in the house. After the horrific murder, Freeman's wife la-di-da went about her business, walking the dog and having phone conversations. She didn't report the crime until almost seventeen hours after it happened!

The emailer notes new developments in this case and refers me to an edition of the local newspaper. I tried to access the correct edition of The Tennessean online but to get back to the date specified I had to pay. The little blurb I could read did state that prosecutors did not believe the man-living-in-the-closet story. Beyond that, it's just a guess why Martha Freeman declared her husband's murderer was living in a closet or even why Jeff Freeman was murdered.
Today, I just discovered your website containing developments from the case of my very best friend of 20 years, Jeff Freeman.
Ever since his tragic, sensless murder over a year ago, I have thought how strange the story his wife told Nashville authorities regarding her lover living in a bedroom closet.
If you will check the April 18th edition of The Tennessean, new details are unfolding about the case, and May 15 is the scheduled trial date for his wife and her lover.
Now matter what outcome takes place, all I know for sure is the world is not as good of a place without Jeff Freeman.

Woman on scooter, 1; would-be robber, 0

We don't know where this happened or even the lady's identity. But it appears that she's a winner in the battle against crime.

No Easy Rider

A would-be robber picked the wrong victim April 18 when he knocked a 59-year-old woman from her scooter in Saveland Park, 3700 S. 2nd St.

The woman was taking an afternoon cruise in the park to feed the birds when a man approached her and demanded money, according to police.

She said she didn't have any. The man told her he wasn't leaving empty-handed.

Perhaps assuming her mode of transport made her an easy target, he struck the woman in the face, knocking her from the battery-powered scooter.

Bad move.

The woman struck her assailant in the knee with her cane before landing a swift knee in his crotch.

With the man writhing on the ground, police said, she doused him with pepper spray.

He reportedly ran from the area screaming, "Lady, you're nuts."

The Rush Limbaugh Persecution

You read correctly. For whether you adore Rush Limbaugh and hang onto his every utterance or consider the man a laughable clown, the minute we start prosecuting trumped up crimes in this country against those whose opinions we disagree with, well next they'll be coming after YOU.

I listened to Rush's radio show the day after he was "arrested" and thought Rush was very nice about the whole thing. The charge was "doctor-shopping", we must assume for the painkilling drugs that once held Rush Limbaugh in their addictive grip. Doctor shopping is the act of going to a variety of doctors, taking advantage of a medical system that values keeping medical records private thus allowing a devious individual to use that loophole to get prescriptions from medicos unaware of other physicians visited and prescriptions obtained for the same "ailment".

Hey, maybe Rush did that. He's never been exactly clear about the charge although he pled "not guilty".

But Rush was very upfront about his pill addiction once his housekeeper blabbed to the National Enquirer how she got drugs for Limbaugh. He also entered a drug rehab program and has been addiction free for over two and a half years.

Rush Limbaugh MugshotWas it really necessary for the law authorities to continue with this silly waste of time and money? I know people totally addicted to crack and other drugs that are totally ignored by law authorities and God knows how many others out there are addicted to prescription medicine the drug companies advertise regularly on TV commercials on a regular basis. Also, imagine if an ordinary guy, ie NOT a Rush Limbaugh, got slapped with that $30,000 fine? Maybe that's small potatoes to a Rush Limbaugh but such a thing provides no help to a poor soul addicted to drugs or any kind. It only makes the situation much worse.

The very same people ranting about the questionable Duke University prosecution should see the similarity in this case and that against Rush Limbaugh. Both involve a law enforcement/prosecution element run amok to fulfill a political agenda.

Is this really how we want to fight out political battles?
From CNN.com:
CNN) -- Firebrand radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh was charged Friday with fraudulently concealing information to obtain prescription drugs, but prosecutors will drop the charge after 18 months if Limbaugh remains in treatment for drug addiction, his lawyer said.

Limbaugh also agreed to pay the state of Florida $30,000 to help cover the cost of the investigation into the conservative radio personality's alleged "doctor shopping," a felony in Florida.

Moussaoui Given Life Without Parole-This is a Good Thing

I never felt comfortable with the notion of giving Moussaoui the death penalty. The man didn't kill anyone with his bare hands and frankly, he appears for all the world like a bit of a hanger-on and a clown. Now I understand all that about how he knew about the impending attacks of 9-11 and indeed might have been a participant.

Problem is, he was not a participant and to me that makes all the difference in the world. Which is not to say this fine fellow shouldn't be locked away with the key tossed aside for the rest of his pathetic little life. Indeed, had Moussaoui been given the death penalty I wouldn't have participated in any marches to defend the creep but the whole notion of frying this guy didn't sit all that well with me.

I could see visions of Al-Jazeera ranting on about the beloved Moussaoui. Not to mention the supreme smugness of Moussaoui on death row and full of himself. Now the man will be reduced to nothingness and we won't have to listen to the rest of the righteous world community as they go on and on over big, bad America putting a man to death because he didn't reveal information the American intelligence community should have already known.

Captain Ed of CaptainsQuarters sums it up nicely:
Now, however, he faces a very long time in prison and the gradual oblivion he deserves. Forty years from now, Moussaoui will die in this supermax facility of old age, and newspapers will have to explain to half of their readership exactly who this man was. Human rights groups will have no interest in him, and while a few lunatic terrorists will salute him in the near term, they will quickly move their focus to other martyrs and more intelligent and dangerous leaders. Hollywood celebrities will not hold benefits for his defense. Publishers of childrens' books will not offer him book deals. Candles will not be lit for his benefit. He gets to live in a cage for decades, and die almost anonymously and unremarkably.

It's hard to argue with that sentence, in the long run.

Littlejohn-Murderer of Imette St. Guillen-Charged With Another Abduction

The murder and torture of Imette St. Guillen was covered on this blog HERE.

Darryl Littlejohn was a bar bouncer who was last seen accompanying graduate student Imette St. Guillen from a NY bar. St. Guillen was later found dead, having been tortured and raped. Littlejohn has been charged with Imette's murder and now another college student fingered this fine fellow with an abduction last October. When Littlejohn was dressed in full law enforcement apparel.

Here's a fellow that had "serial killer" marked all over him. He is much more deserving of the death penalty than Moussoui.

From CNN law.com:
NEW YORK (AP) -- A bar bouncer accused of killing a graduate student in February was charged Thursday with abducting another college student last fall while posing as a law enforcement officer.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDarryl Littlejohn, 41, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on charges of kidnapping, assault, robbery and criminal impersonation.

Defense attorney Kevin O'Donnell said that in each case Littlejohn would "maintain his innocence until the day he dies."

"He has not touched in a criminal manner in his entire life," O'Donnell said.

Authorities say DNA evidence links Littlejohn to both crimes.

They said Littlejohn grabbed the 19-year-old York College student in Queens on October 19 while wearing what appeared to be a law enforcement uniform: a dark shirt with the words "Fugitive Agent," matching pants, and a gun belt with a pair of handcuffs, a walkie-talkie and a silver handgun in its holster, authorities said.

The Most Heartless Crime

The kid was a paraplegic. His Aunt beat him to death for wetting the bed.

A paraplegic. Wetting the bed.

The most heartless of all, he was beat with a belt for having a container of urine in his gym bag. Then he crawls to the bathroom to try and empty the container. A paraplegic. Crawling to the bathroom to empty an offending vial of urine, likely there because the kid had to go and was desperate. After a beating with a belt, he crawled to the bathroom to get rid of the object of his most recent abuse.

While crawling to the bathroom, he went into shock. He suffered for an hour before someone bothered to call 911. He died that night.

There are no words, folks.

This woman was the kid's legal guardian. How on earth did she get that title? Was no one checking up on her?

An autopsy found numerous cuts and bruises on the kid's body.

I pray there's a Rainbow Bridge for humans. I pray that Joshua finds a spot near the bridge, that he is whole and happy.

He's already spent time in a hell on earth.

From the Chicago Tribune:
A Far South Side woman was charged Saturday with first-degree murder in the beating death of her paraplegic 14-year-old nephew.

Brenda Weeks, 45, of the 11900 block of South Yale Avenue habitually beat Joshua Cole as punishment for wetting the bed, Cook County state's attorneys said Saturday in court, where Weeks was denied bail. Weeks, who was Joshua's legal guardian, also failed to take the teen, who had a pacemaker, to cardiac checkups for at least the last two years, state's attorneys said. Joshua also was intubated and used a wheelchair.

Joshua suffered the most recent beating, believed to be done with a belt, Thursday after Weeks found a container of urine belonging to Joshua buried in a gym bag, prosecutors alleged.

After being hit repeatedly by his aunt, Joshua crawled to the bathroom, trying to empty the container, authorities said.

Duke Update

As of this writing there's been three major incidents in the Duke rape story.

First, Prosecutor Nifong broke his vow of silence on the case (he broke his silence BEFORE his election, please note). When asked about reports of another rape report allegedly made by the victim, Nifong was quoted by From ABCnews.go.com:
Nifong also mentioned having received five letters from victims of sexual assault, two of which were from former Duke students who were sexually assaulted by other Duke students during their time at the university.

Nifong had previously vowed not to comment on the case outside of the courtroom, clearly unhappy with media coverage of the case.

We don't know why on earth sexual assaults on other Duke students BY other Duke students would have anything to do with this case. Is this fine prosecutor trying the Duke Lacrosse team to punish them for ALL of Duke sexual crimes, no matter who committed them?

Second, this prosecutor won the Democratic primary right after he broke his vow of silence above.

Third, the defense released a picture of their client as he stood in front of a bank ATM at about the same time he was supposed to be raping the victim in the bathroom of the house of the lacrosse team captains.
