University of Delaware's Secret Indoctrination Program

University of Delaware Logo

The flap began with HotAir.com: HotAir.com:
The University of Delaware subjects students in its residence halls to a shocking program of ideological reeducation that is referred to in the university's own materials as a "treatment" for students' incorrect attitudes and beliefs. The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware's residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is calling for the total dismantling of the program, which is a flagrant violation of students' rights to freedom of conscience and freedom from compelled speech...

The university's views are forced on students through a comprehensive manipulation of the residence hall environment, from mandatory training sessions to "sustainability" door decorations. Students living in the university's eight housing complexes are required to attend training sessions, floor meetings, and one-on-one meetings with their Resident Assistants (RAs). The RAs who facilitate these meetings have received their own intensive training from the university, including a "diversity facilitation training" session at which RAs were taught, among other things, that "[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States

Although it didn't really begin with Michelle Malkin's award winning site. For there's a new guy in town known as FIRE. This group consists of renown academics who are researching this stuff that the liberals keep trying to sneak in.

Liberals can't win their arguments via the arena of ideas (to paraphrase Rush) so they have to cheat. Thus they must fight voter documentation that the dead may vote. If that fails, they must rely on your emotions, boo hoo, like that billboard I described in the sidebar to this link. If that fails, or as just another step to total liberal loser takeover of the world, they will brainwash the young and impressionable.

After the above bombshell hit the Blogosphere on 10/30/07, the University of Delaware then attempts to brainwash US on 10/31/07:

Response to FIRE from the University of Delaware:
I do acknowledge that there have been some missteps with the implementation of our program. This is a new effort involving over two hundred staff. As with any University educational endeavor assessment and feedback measures have been established to identify issues or concerns. Each of the issues FIRE presents are currently under review. In fact, we recently became aware that students in several residence halls were told their participation is mandatory at these activities and we have taken steps to clarify this misconception and to notify students of their rights in this area.

So they acknowledge "missteps" and, indeed, admit that this brainwashing is a new effort involving two hundred staff.

So nobody was paying attention? Why does this endeavor require a staff of two hundred? Could the University of Delaware, heh, have been duped by some closet liberals seeking to brainwash our youth? The U of D also admits that student in the residence halls were told that participation is mandatory. So who told them this?

And so, CAUGHT, the President of the University of Delaware, from Amazonaws.com:
Upon the recommendation of Vice President for Student Life Michael Gilbert and Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr, I have directed that the program be stopped immediately. No further activities under the current framework will be conducted.

I'd like to know the qualifications of this Student Life Michael Gilbert fellow, how much he gets paid and why he let this go on. Same for that lovely Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr. Let's hone in on these folks, why not? Will they lose their job?

But it doesn't stop there. It seems that University of Delaware professors with a conscience have been behind the complaints that brought this matter to the attention of FIRE.

From the Hotair.com interview:
LG: Well, it came by two routes really that joined together. FIRE had been receiving complaints from parents about the program. So they were investigating. My colleague, Jan Blits, were also hearing from our students about the indoctrination and one-on-one meetings and the like in the dorms and so we started looking into it. We were horrified by the materials that we were able to obtain. We passed them on to FIRE and then we learned that FIRE was already on the case and things went from there.

You think that it's necessary for matriculating residents at the University of Delaware to learn the following:
"[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States
.
If so, tell me why.

Welcome to Delaware, where the mighty teachers' union owns the state.

I'm Just Sayin' ...
