So after the 2016 Rio Olympics, where there was NO cooking competition, are done, we get back to MasterChef, which, as of this writing, is down to seven contenders.

For the episode aired in this post, there was presented a unique combination of cooking challenges to include both fine dining and the more humble. Believe me, I wouldn't eat any of that fine dining submission.

This was a mystery box challenge and inside was lamb belly, tandoori black code and yes, of course, octopus. Who eats this stuff? Better, who MAKES this stuff?

The top three mystery box dishes below.

David presented tandoori black code with some kind of pink radish.

Shaun prepared lamb belly and black cod, considered stellar in that it had two proteins. Chefs love to use the word proteins.

Brandi prepared tandoori black cod with octopus and stuffed squash blossoms.

If I put a plate of stuffed squash blossoms on my table my family would have had me checked for insanity.

Shaun won this challenge with his many proteins and he got to appoint which contender would be given canned salmon versus a real salmon. Shaun also got to save one other contender and he chose Eric because he didn't consider Eric a challenge to him.

Shaun gave Nathan, for example, an entire salmon to filet and cook because he thought Nathan could not handle such a daunting task. He gave canned salmon to the contenders he considered more of a challenge. They included Tanoora, Dan, Terry and David.

Chef Ramsay declared Terry's salmon dish the worst of all. And Ramsay declared Tanorra's plating the worst of all, see below.

Terry was sent home after this challenge.

After this challenge, the group was culled down to four, Eric, Tanorra, Dan and Katie.

This small group was charged with working with the humble potato.

Finally, something I cook once in a while.

First they had to make french fries. Serious, french fries! Doesn't everybody toss a couple of frozen potato pieces in an oven or deep fryer?

These contenders did cut their fries by hand.

After the french fry challenge, the contenders, now down to three, had to make mashed potatoes. Tonorra won this challenge.

It came down to Eric and Katie. Still working the potato, these final two were told to prepare, I am not making this up, gnocchi! Who makes this? What the hell is it? Evidently it is made from potatoes.

Whatever the case, Eric doesn't do gnocci so well and this firehouse cook got sent home.

The MasterChef contenders are now down to seven:
Tonorria, Dan, Katie, Brandi, David, Shaun, Nathan.

Come back next week and we'll make some guesses and do some speculating.
