Quote of the Day
"You can only be young once. But you can always be immature."
-Dave Barry

Facts about skin:

1. Your skin kills germs at faster than 1,500 a second.
2. You pick up germs at about one and a quarter million an hour.
3. If you are fit, you control your body temperatures so efficiently that it will not change by so much as a degree whether you are on the Equator or at the North Pole.
4. When you are hot on the outside, each of your pores releases perspiration to cool you in much the same way a steam engine will release its safety valve to prevent over heating.
5. When you are cold on the outside your skin insulates you by using oil glands to make you waterproof.
6. Everytime you wash you take off one layer of skin. But you keep replacing it from below, so you can never wash yourself away.
7. Washing is good for you. It keeps the skin clean, so that the acids in the skin glands can rise to the surface and kill germs.
8. Your skin pigment protects you from the rays of the sun and when exposed to strong rays will discolour. That is what suntan is.
9. The skin on your eyelid is the thinnest surface skin you have and is about 1mm (1/24 in) thick, and the skin on the bottom of your feet is about 1/2cm (1/4in) thick.

Seven Horses, Five dogs, Dead

Soon enough we'll have this fine person or persons’ pic on this blog for posterity in our criminal hall of fame. Someone must be very proud of themselves, such a patriot who would take a gun and shoot and kill twelve animals for what? Pleasure? Target practice?

From Pensacolanenews.com:
Injured ColtThe colt was shot in the top of its spine Monday night, when gunfire was sprayed inside a 113-acre lot in Beulah. Five dogs, English setters, died on the scene. Seven horses were confirmed dead Wednesday. Three other horses remained in treatment at the Northwest Florida Large Animal Clinic on Quintette Road in Pace.

Escambia County sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting at Desmond Davis' property near Frank Reeder and Jay roads. As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests were made, said Sgt. Mike Ward, Sheriff's Office spokesman.

He's Missing His Genitals But Is He Insane?

This is a strange one. A Superior Court Judge is found guilty of the crime of possessing child pornography. So far, this makes sense. However this fine judge arranged a trip to Russia where he taped a young adolescent in a sexual encounter. For this crime, Judge Thompson was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The good judge, so it is explained, has no sexual organs because of disfigurement while he fought in Vietnam. His THREE lawyers, of course, used his war wounds to explain away his behavior.

Let's see...how long ago was Vietnam? And this man just realized he'll never father children or engage in sex due to his horrible war wounds? And because of those war wounds he should be forgiven for owning child pornography involving toddlers being violently sexually assaulted?

There is nothing more important than the helpless children. Yes, our wounded soldiers are to be honored and taken care of. No society will ever condone the sexual torture of toddlers. Even by the war wounded.

From Courierpostonline.com:
Former judge gets 10 years in prison

Former Superior Court Judge Stephen W. Thompson, who presided at criminal trials in Camden before being arrested almost three years ago on charges of possessing child pornography, was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison on that charge.

Thompson, of Haddon Township, asserted throughout his trial in September that his addiction to child pornography, some of it involving toddlers being violently sexually assaulted, began because of the massive genital wounds he suffered in Vietnam.

He continued that claim at Thursday's sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Joseph E. Irenas, saying the realization that he could never father children or engage in sex "led to the improper and illegal behavior."

Somehow I Suspect There's More to This Story

Okay, so the guy owns a firearms company and he needs an accountant. He hires a new Chief Financial Officer, a fellow who owned a small accounting business but how good was that income if he was "largely supported by his parents"?

But Mr. Edelman must be some great employer in that he gave his new CFO a $3 million dollar bonus. This was money that the alleged embezzler, a Denis Shusterman, did NOT steal. It was a bonus granted to him by his now accuser.

Well sure the bonus didn't give Shusterman the right to steal from his employer. But hey, a three million dollar bonus? We don't know what's missing from the tale of this true crime, but something isn't kosher.

From Bakersfield.com:
A tax accountant embezzled $10 million from a client, then used it to fund a lavish lifestyle that included a $2.2 million California mansion, a $74,000 bat mitzvah for his daughter and the production of three horror movies, authorities said Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Denis I. Shusterman blew through the $10 million over eight years, spending about half on the three B movies. They said he also wrote off many of his good times as business expenses when he filed his income taxes.

As Shusterman's embezzlement and fraud trial opened in federal court, prosecutors also said he gave $495,000 to one of three mistresses and $725,000 to a hospital shipping clerk who soon gambled it away at the craps tables.

"He was totally enamored with the moviemaking business," testified lead witness Leslie Edelman, who owned Kimber Mfg., a Yonkers, N.Y., firearms company that lost the $10 million. "He wanted to be part of it. He wanted the lifestyle."

Shusterman's trial is expected to last more than a week.

Federal authorities started investigating him after his mother was convicted in 2002 of helping embezzle $1.3 million from the suburban Philadelphia synagogue where she worked as a bookkeeper. Betty Shusterman, now 74, is serving a four-year federal prison term.

Authorities learned that Shusterman, 44, had moved his family to a $2.2 million home in exclusive Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., in 2001, drove a BMW, took Edelman to the Cannes Film Festival and increased support payments to a woman with whom he had a child, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Zausmer said.

Shusterman initially ran a small accounting business and was largely supported by his parents, prosecutors said, until 1996, when Edelman hired him as Kimber's chief financial officer on a consulting basis and paid him an annual salary of $125,000.

Prosecutors say Edelman also approved a one-time, $3 million bonus that gave Shusterman a taste of the good life. He then used Edelman's business as a personal bank account, according to Zausmer.

The Unborn Never Drew a Breath

From the brief description of this crime, a tragedy that happened in my neck of the woods, it would appear that someone this couple knew did the shooting. Whoever killed them started shooting as the pregnant woman was entering her car then went up to the car and killed her friend while he was inside.

Two people now dead for God knows what stupid reason but what about the woman's six-month fetus? Whatever the two victims did to bring about their deaths, assuming this is the case, we can all agree that the unborn baby was totally innocent.

Ah, but since the baby never took a breath out of its dead mother's womb, the baby will not be considered the victim of homicide.

All to save the abortion lovers' demands that an unborn baby can be killed up until its day of birth as is their Supreme Court given right.

From Baltimoresun.com:
Man, pregnant woman slain

Noontime gunfire claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her male companion yesterday in West Baltimore, and city police were seeking the public's help in finding their killer.

The victims, Jennifer Lynne Morelock, 25, of New Windsor and Jason David Woycio, 29, of Westminster, were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where the man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival and Morelock died about 5 p.m., said Detective Michael Baier of the homicide squad.

Baier said Morelock was about six months pregnant and that efforts to save the fetus failed. He said that it died in the womb - and under Maryland law, because the fetus had not drawn a breath of air, its death is not considered a homicide.

The detective said Morelock had stepped out and was a few feet from the vehicle when she was shot multiple times in the upper body and fell on the sidewalk in front of a home. The gunman then fired shots into the car, hitting Woycio, who slumped on the seat.

A quasi-investigator in Google groups' True Crime group did some investigating on the matter.

Interesting:
A. Fetal Homicide

Fetal homicide was a major focus of legislators this session, with five new laws enacted (Maryland, West Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona). In Maryland, the governor signed a bill into law that recognizes a viable fetus as a distinct victim of murder, manslaughter, or unlawful homicide. Unlike the other fetal homicide bills passed this session, however, the Maryland law explicitly states that the newly enacted measure should not be construed to confer personhood on the fetus.

Missing Toddler

She's about the same age as my granddaughter. She was last seen at 11:30 p.m. but when her mother woke at 4 a.m. the door of the apartment was unlocked and the child was missing.

This story was just breaking at the time of this writing. The headline of this quote states that this case has been re-classified into a criminal matter. No backup of this fact is given anywhere in the article. We'll assume that the investigators know more about what went on in that house the night Analyce disappeared and shared this with the reporter.

While strange things do happen, toddlers this age just don't normally get up in the middle of the night, unlock the front door, and take off willy-nilly into the dark of night. And why did the mother awake at 4 in the a.m.? The child was already gone so it couldn't have been the whimper of a little one that roused her.

For now, let us hope that the child was kidnapped by a relative and is somewhere, alive and safe.

From WBIR.com:
Missing girl case now deemed criminal in nature

Analyce GuerraSmyrna Police had no new details on the disappearance of a 28-month-old girl by 5 p.m. Monday. Investigators have changed the status of the case from missing child to that of a criminal nature.

Analyce Guerra was last seen at Meadow Wood Apartments on Nissan Drive at 11:30 p.m. Sunday. When mother Eva Guerra woke up at 4 a.m. Monday, her youngest child was gone and the front door of the apartment was unlocked.

Police began searching for Analyce around 4:30 a.m. Monday. Hours later, nearly 80 volunteers had searched a two-mile radius five times, including the banks of nearby Stewarts Creek, fields and drainage basins.

"I hope one of them will find her and bring her back home," the mother said.

Search crews consisted of members from the Tennessee Army National Guard, Smyrna Police and Fire Departments, and Smyrna Police Citizens Police Academy.

Analyce Guerra was last seen wearing a denim overall dress with sunflowers and beads on it. Both her ears are pierced and she has a birthmark over her left eye.

An Easter Tragedy

Two men get into an argument on a street corner. Shots ensue. Another two year old is gone as a stray bullet hits the child in the chest and kills him. All this on Easter Sunday. With the little boy dressed in his Easter best.

His killers, when caught, will be charged with homicide. Because little David, thankfully, had taken a breath outside of his mother's womb.

From the AP:
Stray bullet kills toddler in car seat

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sobbing and clutching her son's toy, the mother of a 2-year-old killed when a stray bullet pierced their minivan on Easter urged police to find her son's killer.

"I want him to wake up every day and see my face and hear my voice and see my son's picture every day," Joanne Sanabria told reporters.

David Pacheco Jr., dressed in his Easter best, was strapped in a car seat Sunday afternoon as the family drove through the Bronx a few miles from home.

"I was driving and I heard the gunshot and I heard my son screaming," Sanabria, 28, said Monday. "God only knows how much I wish that bullet would have hit me."

Her daughters, ages 8 and 11, and her sister's family were also in the vehicle but unharmed.

According to police, the shots were fired as two groups of men argued.

An off-duty emergency medical technician, Angelo Cruz, heard the gunfire and ran to help the toddler, but the shooter disappeared.

The little boy had been struck in the chest and was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later.

His father, David Pacheco, said Monday he owes his thanks to Cruz. He said the resuscitation effort gave him time to see his son alive one last time.

Grieving family and friends described the boy as energetic and always smiling. "He was a happy kid," his uncle Victor Castillo said.

The Demons of Stephen Marshall

Something drove Stephen Marshall to scout down the homes of known sex offenders, drive to several on the list, and shot two of those who answered dead.

Later Marshall shot himself dead when police tried to arrest him.

Marshall is from Canada. We don't know what the law is in Canada as regards known sex offenders. Here in the United States we have what is arguably the most illegal law on the books but one will never get a politician to oppose it.

For when a criminal has served his or her time, the rule is they should be able to go on with their lives. Save sex offenders and particularly child sex offenders. These special sorts of criminals must place their names in a special database that the unaware public can check and see if strange people living around them might be an unknown danger.

One can only speculate that Stephen Marshall was either a sex offender himself or had been the victim of a sex offender. Because while two sex offenders ended up dead from Marshall's rampage, it seems there might well have been others had they only been home when Marshall knocked.

Marshall is Canadian and wended his way down to Maine to embark upon what appears to have been a well planned murder spree.

This is yet another problem that arises from this questionable publication of criminals who have served their time. Not that I want this law changed but I've often seen the problems with it. What if the names of robbers who have served their time were published on such a list that potential victims can check to see if the new neighbor once robbed homes?

My daughter told me she checked the local sex registry near her home and found no one living close by and a possible danger to sweet granddaughter. The system is used and it DOES work.

It's fraught with questions, is all. And this is one of them.

From CTV.com:
CTV.ca News Staff

Stephen MarshallThe Cape Breton man who used an online registry to track down and kill two sex offenders in Maine visited the homes of another four offenders but no one came to the door, The Canadian Press reported.

Maine police told CP that investigators traced Stephen Marshall's movements during his trip to Maine using a global satellite positioning program on a laptop computer in his possession.

Det. Brian Strout, an investigator with Maine State Police, confirmed that another four people were visited.

"Obviously he did have a plan in place," he said.

"Maybe we'll find it. We haven't uncovered it fully yet, but he had some kind of plan there."

Strout and a partner returned from the Marshall's hometown in North Sydney, N.S., where he collected evidence from his apartment.

A source who asked to remain anonymous suggested other sex offenders were lucky to be alive.

"There were two people killed; there was the potential for four more,"he told CP. "They either weren't home, or they didn't answer the door."

The unnamed source said Marshall "had a street-finder GPS program on his computer specifically to find the addresses."

Duke Update
Duke Rape Investigation LogoAs of this writing, the latest and most damning of the new revelations is that the accuser had reported yet another rape by three white men when she was 16. The history of all this is confusing in that by all reported accounts, she didn’t report the rape until three years after it happened.

I have just go to be a fly on the wall when this case goes to trial. If it ever does.
