Teenager Kills Cop, Wounds Another

Michael Kennedy was 18 years old. At around 3:30 pm on Monday 5/8/2006, Kennedy, dressed in camouflage and armed with five pistols and an AK-47, hijacked a van and drove to the Sully District police substation in northern Virginia. There he shot one officer five times then Kennedy continued his shooting rampage. He succeeded in killing Vicky Armel, a detective who happened to be in the parking lot of the police station that day. The other police officer, Michael Garbarino, was taken to a nearby shock trauma unit. As of this writing it appears that Garbarino will survive.

Michael/Vicky Armel montage

From NBC4.com:
Officials said Michael Kennedy, 18, opened fire at the Sully District substation at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, killing a female detective and wounding two other police employees before he was shot and killed by return fire from police.

And this:
According to police, a suspected gunman, identified as 18-year-old Michael Kennedy, drove onto the police department's parking lot and opened fire on officers, killing nine-year veteran Vicky Armel and critically wounding a 23-year veteran of the force who the Washington Post has identified as 53-year-old Michael Garbarino.

According to those who knew Kennedy he was one strange dude. He did have a web site, at Myspace which does seem an odd site.

As of this writing there's not much known about Michael Kennedy or why he went on that shooting rampage. There've been reports that Armel might have had something to do with serving a warrant on Kennedy for an incident involving the shooting of a dog.

Another odd thing: it took police almost 24 hours to get a hold of Kennedy's family.

Kennedy was shot and killed in the hale of gunfire he started.

Michael Kennedy was a strange human being. Now he's killed a young detective and mother of two children.

Perhaps it's best that Kennedy was killed during the shootout. What's known about this young man is not at all good.

Strange Duke Tidbit

Odd.

Duke University hires a team to investigate what went wrong during the Duke investigation. The problem, as the university bigwigs consider, was Duke's initial failure to react aggressively to the news that there had been a reported rape in a home occupied by the college's lacrosse team captains.

Before going into the details of the report, I must ask a few questions. First, why on earth did Duke University feel the need to PAY people to figure out what it did wrong? Why even give a salary to the President of the university and his many assistants if they have to hire allegedly "impartial" people to figure out how the college screwed up? Seems like a waste of money and time to me.

Those questions aside, what did the paid preparers of the report have to say about how Duke handled the rape incident and the university's reaction to it?

Richard Brodhead, Duke University's President, did not know a thing about the rape for a week after the incident and then only learned about it by reading a student newspaper.

When he did read about the incident, he had his VP of student affairs check into it. The VP of student affairs contacted Durham police. Durham police told the Duke envoy that the woman who claimed rape was not credible and the entire incident will likely fizzle.

Duke University thus did not respond to the allegations but, we must assume as the report does not dwell on university reaction, continued on with university business per normal. It was only when the prosecutor began investigating and the accompanying flurry of investigative activity that the university began to pay attention.

Okay, what was the university supposed to do in light of the allegations had the college responded immediately? I'm thinking perhaps the college could have suspended the lacrosse coach sooner. Beyond that, the university could not have done much more than refer the incident to the police for investigation.

I'm thinking Duke University is using this "study", something I could have done within ten minutes, to smooth over any bad PR its alleged "inaction" might have caused within the racially divided community. The study is telling the world "Hey we didn't know a thing about it until a week after it happened. Then we were told by the police that the whole matter was really nothing. Don't blame us; we're as racially sensitive as anyone."

Perhaps the vaunted university felt a need to go through this la-di-da thing with a special report et al. As it is, the ballyhooed report just further muddies the matter and looks, on the very top of the surface, to be little more than a money-waster to cover some big Duke career behinds.

From ABCnews.com:
The report was commissioned by the Duke president and prepared by Julius Chambers, a former chancellor at North Carolina Central University, where the accuser is a student, and William G. Bowen, a former president of Princeton University who is now head of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Their report does not say who at the Durham Police Department cast doubt on the accuser's complaint. But, it said, allowing those comments to shape Duke's thinking "was a major mistake."

Florida Horse and Dog Murderer Found

The cruel shooting of five dogs and several horses by persons unknown in Pensacola, Florida was first covered on this blog HERE.

We don't have a picture of the very brave Craig M. Smith who pointed a shotgun at innocent horses and dogs and shot them dead. He killed five dogs and eight horses for what? For sport? His shooting rampage also left one colt paralyzed.

Let us at least print his name proudly in honor of such a sweet fellow.

Smith faces 15 years for each horse killing and five years for each dog killing. Then there's illegal possession of firearms and trespassing. That should be enough to lock this guy away for a long time while he thinks about what a brave big man he is.

From the Pensacolanews:
A Pensacola man was charged Thursday in connection with the April 17 shootings that resulted in the deaths of eight horses and five dogs in Beulah.

Craig M. Smith, 24, faces five felony counts of cruelty to animals resulting in a cruel death and eight felony counts of killing or abusing horses, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office reported.

Comment on Julie Popovich Case

Julie Popovich went missing in August of 2005, covered on this blog HERE. The comment below was left on the actual post. The commenter claims to be Julie's sister.

In response to my assertion in the post that Julie was depicted in various publications as being an actress and/or a model, Christie Popovich denies it all. So far as I know, Julie Popovich is still missing. We thank you for the updates Christie and do keep us updated on the status of your sister's investigation.
Hi there, my name is Christie Popovich, I am Julie's 18 year old sister. First off, Julie never acted a day in her life and second, she had met the man she left with once at the same bar a few weeks before but didn't know him previous to that. Just trying to get some information straight for you.

Another Intriguing True Crime Comment

Randolph Dial is an interesting character who has lived a strange life. His most recent and most publicized exploit was running off with the wife of the warden of the jail in which he was an inmate. Nobody really knows how Bobbi Jo Parker ended up with Dial when she went missing in 1994. Some say she was abducted, some say she went willingly. What is known is that Bobbi Jo and Dial were finally discovered living on some scratch of land in 2005. So Bobbi Jo Parker lived with Dial for over ten years. We are to believe she had no chance of escape during that entire period though personal accounts of people who knew Bobbi Jo and Dial swear they were a devoted couple.

Initial report of Dial HERE.
Follow up post to Dial HERE

The commenter below asserts that Dial was married to a Katherine and that they had a daughter named Rose. In fact my initial post above DOES mention a Dial wife named Katherine but my post, with my sources linked at the bottom of the post, asserts the daughter of Dial and Katherine was named Roxanne. The sources could have it wrong, sources often do.
there is more to dial than is mentioned on this site. for example, one of his wife'a was katherine (Kathy Dial) who had a daughter with Dial named Roxanne who both lived in Tahlequah Ok. Dial was known to be hiding from someone, something and preferred to be hiding while camping at Horseshoe bend,& Kathy took him food until he & a young girl he claimed to be his daughter moved on. Not long after this, Kathy herself got killed. Her death to this day has not been solved by the Tahlequah police or anyone else. I know more because Kathy was my friend.

I'm not sure I understand the commenter's assertion that "Kathy herself got killed" and this factoid was mentioned nowhere within my sources.

Again do keep us posted. If Dial was also involved the death of his wife Katherine it's something no one involved in the investigation appears to be following up on.

Sarah Ewing Killed by Stepmother

Some people are just born mean. Indeed. Some people have a mean and nasty streak in them and perhaps that's just nature.

Sarah Ewing Though Shanna Pritchard is only 23 years old, this is a woman evidently born mean. So mean that she killed a little five year old girl, Sarah Ewing, who was in her charge. For if mean people have no object to defuse their meanness they tend to latch onto the helpless and innocent.

From Fortwayne.com:
Nearly two weeks after 5-year-old Sarah Nancy Ewing died at a local hospital from head injuries, her stepmother has been arrested and charged in her death.

Sarah's family situation is a bit murky. Sarah had been living with her maternal grandmother when full custody of her and her younger brother was given to her father. Who was married to the very nice Shanna Pritchard who sent Sarah to the hospital with head injuries not once, but twice. The second time five-year old Sarah Ewing died a lingering death. As with so many of these child-death cases, the department in charge of investigating children's injuries looked into the matter the first time little Sarah had a head injury. They cleared the family of any culpability. The second time Sarah had a fatal head injury, the overpaid social workers finally removed Sarah's 2 year old brother from the home.

It's not clear where Sarah's mother is or why Sarah's last name is not the same as her father.

What is clear is that Sarah deserves to be a laughing and happy child and the ones who should have protected her failed to do so.

Crime on Ebay

The winning bid for the fine collection of Spiderman comics was $19,000. A Gabriel Mitchell offered the comic series for sale on Ebay. He then sent the bid winner copies of bar codes allegedly taken from the comic books, requesting $10,000 for half of the collection to be shipped, plus a $200 fee for mailing expenses. We must assume that the winning bidder would then send the rest of the bid once the first half of the collection was received and approved.

Only Gabriel Mitchell mailed the bid-winner a bunch of blank pages for his ten thousand bucks.

Folks, it would seem that Mitchell was an opportunist who really only needed ten grand, why be greedy? At this point, the entire thing is a felony crime, pure and simple. It's very unlikely the bidder will ever get his ten thousand bucks back.

From 1010wins.com:
NEW YORK -- A Queens man is being charged with selling $10,000 worth of Spiderman comics on Ebay to a Virginia resident -- then failing to deliver the goods.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says Gabriel Mitchell, 20, of East Elmhurst is charged with grand larceny.

More Technological Crime

If thieving on Ebay isn't enough to boggle the mind with the possibilities of new crimes to be committed while riding the waves of technology, consider the case of the ingenious gas thieves.

Seems two gas stations in St. Louis were victimized by gas thieves who bypassed the entire external keypad obstacle, using keys to re-program the gas pump to deliver gas for exactly zero cents per gallon.

From KSDK.com:
They (the thieves) have a key to the pump and then after they open up the pump they go in and they reprogram the pump, so they can have free gas. And then everybody behind them sees what they're doing, and they continue," says Tippit.

Tippit was asked why gas station employees would not notice such activity.

Turns out that the only people with codes to re-program the gas pump internal keypads are employees of companies who deliver the gas.

A sting was set up; at least one perpetrator was caught in the act.

What's more intriguing is the line of regular Joe type customers who quickly availed themselves of free gas once they realized what was coming down.

Frankly I don't know what I'd do if I came upon a gas pump offering gas at zero cents a gallon. It's awfully tempting to just gas up and go. I'd likely question the matter as I envision such an amazing scenario because with my luck, I would be the one arrested and charged.

Church Leader and Polygamist on FBI 10 Most Wanted List

PolygamistWarren Jeffs is a church leader in the break-off faction of the Church of Latter Day Saints, the faction that still practices polygamy.

Only Warren Jeffs is more than a misguided polygamist. The man arranges marriages between older men and underage girls. He is also a pervert wanted for molesting an underage girl and as a participant in the rape of an underage girl.

It is hoped that by placing this fine fellow on the FBI's vaunted list that someone will come forward and turn the creep in.

From CBSnews.com:
(CBS/AP) Polygamist church leader Warren Jeffs has been placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in hopes that the additional exposure and reward money will lead to his arrest.

Jeffs, 50, is accused of arranging marriages between underage girls and older men. He is wanted in Arizona on criminal charges of sexual conduct with a minor. He also was charged in Utah with rape as an accomplice.
