Book-Palin's "Going Rogue";TV-"Hell's Kitchen","Hawaii 5-0"; Political Analysis Midterm 2010 Election; More

There’s everything in this Blog post from Chinese recipes using Cole Slaw to Sponge Bob dressed grandkiddles to reviews of the new Hawaii 5-0 and Hell’s Kitchen. Also, lots of political analysis, including an overview of the 2010 elections, some political cartoons, on to some miscellany involving a lottery winner’s fifteen minutes of fame, some Ravens’ tickets, and the road to celebrity hell.

Finally, a book review of Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue”, it’s a great book that the liberal critics hated as much as they hate her TLC program showcasing Alaska.

"Going Rogue"…-An American Life…Sarah Palin

I won’t say that this book was a “can’t put down” affair. I am a bit of a political junkee but you can take what I know about Alaska, put it up the behind of a flea, and it would still rattle around like a BB in a box car. Well now I know a bit more about Alaska. The bigger point is that an Alaskan would be more absorbed in at least the first half of this book than I was.

Which is not to say this is a boring book either, although I’d suggest it’s the sort of thing that would appeal mostly to someone involved with politics, even if only on a passing level.

My daughter is, well she’s my daughter, which means she gets some exposure to politics of a sort, although my jibber-jabbering might be but background noise to her. But she’s hardly a junkee on the matter and this book IS her book. She lent it to me. She did read it, almost to the end so she tells me. Daughter is a huge Palin fan and the book was a gift to her from her husband.

The last half of the book was the part that held me spellbound. For this is the part in which Palin tells of her experiences on the campaign trail with John McCain. It is the part that held my interest, as I scanned for names and brickbats.

As is her wont, Palin did NOT write one bad thing about John McCain. McCain was, ahem, not the most favored candidate by the GOP base out here in la-la land, his carefully crafted image as a “maverick” not appreciated except perhaps by the Democrats and the Blue Blood GOP Ruling Class. In fact, it was only the presence of Palin that the GOP base had any enthusiasm at all for the presidential election of 2008.

“I appreciated Reagan’s passion and conviction, and the way he so plainly articulated his love for our country. Like millions of others, I related to him personally-he was one of us. I liked him, and I liked the fact that he was never afraid to call it as he saw it.”

While I definitely consider myself a conservative of the highest order, I was never a big fan of Ronald Reagan. This was because during the term of Reagan’s presidency I was just coming down off of that silly high young people go through when they attend college, think they become super smart, and become dumb liberals.

Jimmy Carter, God Bless this worst president ever, so far worse than Obamer as I see it, changed a lot of that for me as such as long gas lines and 18% interest rates brought me back to reality. I still thought I was cool and hip, however, and while I voted for Reagan, I distrusted him in that manner of the young of my generation who mistrusted those over 30.

I wasn’t a big political junkee in that day although I did, insert smile here, attend Reagan’s inauguration. Now I chance to hear speech tidbits of Reagan and marvel at a Republican with enough courage and confidence to say the things he said. I understand why Reagan is so beloved by today’s conservatives, who feel as if they wander in the desert, lost and leaderless save for the likes of McCain and Karl Rove.

Palin makes a good case of her allegiance to Reagan throughout the book and by reading of the trials of her life, how she governed the city of Wasilla and the state of Alaska, the reader can tell that Palin believes in the principles of both fiscal and social conservatism and practices that belief.

“But lessons learned on the micro level still apply to the macro. Just as my family couldn’t fund every item on our wish list, and had to live within our means as well as save for the future, I felt we needed to do that for the state.”

Palin really did govern Alaska in a fiscally conservative manner. The quote above is really in the book, and if some day Palin should run, and win, for President, well we can sure use those very simple, and true, words to keep her in line right? I daresay you’ll not find anything like that in “Dreams of My Father”, just throwing it out there. Obama’s wife got a job making $300,000 a year at a Chicago hospital for doing nothing while Todd Palin had to work the North Slope in Alaska to feed his family.

It was Palin’s story of her campaign for Vice-President that was most interesting. She tells of the Couric interview, the treatment she and her family received by the McCain campaign staff. Whoever this fellow called Schmidt is, he’s a nasty dude.

We learn of wardrobes that she did NOT buy, library books she did NOT ban, ethics violations she did NOT make.

Finally Palin had to resign her governorship because the Obama administration’s pack of jackals filed ethics complaints against her with no merit. And while the Alaskan AG could use state funds to follow the puppet masters in the Democratic party, the Palins had to pay for Sarah’s defense out of their own funds.

It was the right thing to do.

Palin is not exactly coy about her future plans. Everyone, of course, wants to know if she intends to run for the Big Job. Palin never leaves out that possibility.

I think she is a classy lady who didn’t bite the McCain hand that fed her, who followed her own beliefs, who was beloved by Alaskan citizens at an 80% approval rating.

Read this book before the kick up to the 2012 campaign season folks. She’s not a rich Romney, a Gingrich has-been, a Jeb Bush not time yet if ever, a Huckabee aw shucks talk show host. She’s an up and comer and they’re going to throw everything at her.

I chanced to prepare the recipe below as there’s a real problem with Chinese food in Delaware.

There are NO Jews in southern Delaware, I don’t know why. Thus we have NO decent Chinese restaurants in this part of the swamps.

Thus, as one who loves decent Chinese food and can’t stand the mush, previously frozen stuff they sell at the Chinese carry-outs round these parts, I decided to try preparing my own Chinese meals.

My first attempt was the following recipe and what a surprise.

I was able to obtain rice noodles on the bottom shelf at the grocer where I had to reach far to the back of the dusty shelf. I was not to be deterred.

But the surprise ingredient of Cole Slaw mix left me doubtful.

It worked great! I must say it’s way better than slicing and dicing and chopping cabbage to spray all over my small kitchen.

We’ll keep trying to make decent Chinese at home and who knows, in due course I may open my own Chinese carryout here in the swamps where so desperately needed.

Shrimp pa thai

4 oz uncooked thick rice noodles

½ lb uncooked small shrimp, peeled and deveined

2 tsp anola oil

1 large onion, chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

1 egg, beaten

3 cups coleslaw mix

4 green onions, thinly sliced

1/3 cup rice vinegar

¼ cup sugar

3 tsp reduced-sodium soy sauce

2-3 tsp chili garlic sauce

2 tbsp chopped salted peanuts

Cook noodles according to package directions. In a large nonstick skillet or wok, stir-fry shrimp in oil until shrimp turn pink; remove and set aside. Add onion and garlic to the pan. Make a well in the center of the onion mixture; add egg. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes or until egg is completely set. Add the coleslaw mix, green onions, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, fish sauce, chili garlic sauce and peanuts; heat through. Return shrimp to the pan; heat through. Drain noodles; toss with shrimp mixture. Garnish.

Melissa and the Ravens…15 Minutes of Fame Turns to Hell

It’s just the funniest thing.

Although daughter was cold-cocked, as the expression goes. For in a fit of serendipity, a series of events were launched sometime in mid-September 2010 that….well it’s just the funniest thing.

It began with my. Daughter’s, and granddaughter’s scheduled trip to Penna. Dutch country then scheduled for the last weekend in September. I am a voracious planner and once daughter and I scheduled this trip, I warned her not to change it as daughter, a young woman running a busy household with a normal but active American child, does not plan her life as carefully as mine.

Which is not to cast aspersions on daughter in her early 30’s for when I was that age my life too took twists and turns, unscheduled, unplanned, down right scary. Now that I’m older and retired, well I have lots of time to write my lists, fill in my calendar, get ready for whatever, smug that all bases are covered.

I accept that daughter’s life is way busier than mine plus she’s got a husband who will change things, something my husband would not dare do…heh. But when you’re making reservations at a hotel and will be charged a night’s lodging should you not cancel in a timely fashion, such as careening through life without a plan is not an option. I sternly informed daughter of this and with sincerity she said we would definitely be going to PA Dutch country, just us three girls, three generations, for a good time to be had by all.

On another point, The Wise I had an article printed in an anthology, myself being a writer who does quite well with those “Chicken Soup for the Soul” type books, having lived a full and interesting type of life with intriguing and funny stories, much like this one. The publisher of this anthology was attending a big book fair in Baltimore and I was scheduled to do a reading of my story. Thus I combined the trip up to Baltimore for this reading with picking up daughter and granddaughter for trip to PA.

“You’ll will never believe,” she told me one morn about two weeks before scheduled trip. “I entered the Maryland lottery to win tickets to the Ravens game. I told Mike I was going to win and they just called me. I won but won’t be able to go.”

Why I couldn’t imagine such a thing. She won this big deal thing- she’s an avid Ravens fan-and she can’t go?

“The game I won the tickets for is on the weekend we’re supposed to go to PA,” daughter explained.

Well goodness, there was plenty of time for me to change the reservation without penalty. We could go to Pa on another weekend but those tickets were only good on that specific date. I could still have driven up to the Baltimore book fair for my reading and I thought about it. But I decided to pass it by. You do get paid for such readings but not all that much. It wasn’t that important to me.

IT’s of no import to this missive that we all did get to Penn. Dutch country. But that Ravens ticket is the gift that kept on giving.

Below, some pics that should make you smile.

Above is granddaughter, forced to be a Ravens’ fan for her parents’ passion, insert smile here.

Below the pic that is really a hoot.

For daughter goes into a local Royale farms near her one morn. The cashier knows her and waves a flier around with the pic above on it. It’s her pic, used by the Ravens’ PR people, on a flier. I assume two things here. 1)You must have to sign some kind of release form that allows the team to use your image in their promos and 2)Melissa presents as a kind of ordinary type of person that YOU TOO CAN WIN A RAVENS TICKET LIKE THE WOMAN IN THIS PICTURE BY PLAYING THE MARYLAND LOTTERY!

Heh. Melissa demanded that the cashier give her all those fliers. She was informed that the fliers are EVERYWHERE. They’re down in Severna Park, all over Glen Burnie….in all of Anne Arundel county Maryland there’s Melissa’s pic on this Ravens’ flier.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! As my daughter’s telling me this horror story, IT GETS BETTER! The people at the Royale farm tell her that the Maryland Lottery has these scratch-off instant lottery things. On one of them, when you scratch it, UP COMES THIS SAME PICTURE OF HER!

By this time I need an adult diaper for the laughter. Imagine that your fifteen minutes of fame comes when you least expect it, in the form of fliers with your picture on it, and little cards that people use to scratch off to reveal your face.

It was serendipity that Melissa wins the Ravens tickets when I was warning her not to change the plans. It was serendipity that she became a , eh, “celebrity” when she least expected it. You got to admit that bit about the scratch-off tickets, well ain’t that just the darndest?

I am going to buy a frame and hang up this flier because fame is fleeting. This giggle of a story should be preserved that Kaitlyn’s children can some day have a smile.

Halloween

It’s Halloween 2010 and granddaughter is spongebob Squarepants. She even won the contest for most original costume! The most amusing of it all, it was her father who so artfully designed her costume. AKA that man my daughter lives with.

Below some videos of Kaitlyn’s school party. All entered on this Blog for posterity, that Kaitlyn’s children may someday have a smile.

Interesting Factoid About That Awful Obamacare

The following came to me via email:

Did you know this Real Estate Tax is part of the new Health Care Bill??? Like Princess Pelosi said, "We have to pass it to find out what's in it." SURPRISE!!! "This one's going to hit you where it hurts! Can't wait to find out what else is in there!! How 'bout you?!!

Did you know that if you sell your house after 2012 you will pay a 3.8% sales tax on it?

That's $3,800 on a $100,000 home etc.

When did this happen? It's in the healthcare bill. Just thought you should know.

SALES TAX TO GO INTO EFFECT 2013 (Part of HC Bill)

REAL ESTATE SALES TAX

Under the new health care bill - did you know that all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% Sales Tax? The bulk of these new taxes don't kick in until 2013 (presumably after obama's re-election). You can thank Nancy, Harry and Barack and your local Democrat Congressman for this one. If you sell your $400,000 home, there will be a $15,200 tax. This bill is set to screw the retiring generation who often downsize their homes. Is this Hope & Change great or what? Does this stuff makes your November and 2012 votes more important?

Oh, you weren't aware this was in the obamacare bill? Guess what, you aren't alone. There are more than a few members of Congress that aren't aware of it either (result of clandestine midnight voting for huge bills they've never read). AND, there are a few other surprises lurking.

Below, for what it’s worth, MY take on the mid-term elections of 2010.

The Electoral Tidal Wave of 2010

It’s been a full week as of this writing and in the duration and in the aftermath I’ve had enough time to ponder how it all came down, ruminate on the rumors, consider the campaigns and conclude proper conclusions as is my wont.

We shall deal only with the infamous Delaware contest featuring one quite famous candidate and one not so notorious but equally important in the elected position then being sought. Christine O’Donnell trounced incumbent Mike Castle who held the position of Delaware’s only Representative in America’s House in the Republican primary to run as the Republican nominee for Senator. Glen Urquhart ran against the Delaware GOP Blue Blood Ruling Class favorite Michelle Rollins and defeated her to run as the Republican nominee seeking Mike Castle’s House seat. Arguably, the position of Delaware’s only Representative in America’s House is more powerful than the two senators Delaware has like all other states in the union. The campaign of Glen Urquhart was as important to Delawarians as the run by O’Donnell even though Urquhart was over-shadowed by O’Donnell for the entire campaign. Urquhart’s campaign and the result of his race also serves todisprove a major point that the Blue Blood Ruling Class GOP would have you believe.

I call them the Blue Blood Ruling Class GOP, both the Delaware sect and national, for a reason. It is not a complimentary title. For the likes of Karl Rove classlessly trashed the lawfully elected candidate of the GOP base in Delaware the VERY NIGHT SHE WON! They think they are better, far superior, supremely more tasteful but I can think of nothing more vulgar than what Rove did that night.

Not that Rove didn’t have the right to his opinion but this is a bundle of sunshine who claims to be a political prognosticator of the highest order. I am thinking in Prognostication Class 101 the first lesson would be to NEVER TRASH YOUR OWN CANDIDATE AFTER THEY’VE WON THE NOMINATION! Just a hunch, go with me on this. Delaware GOP common class folks such as myself have tolerated Mike Castle for a gazillion years, twice as the state’s Governor, before my time, once as Loot-Gov I believe, and a thousand years as Delaware’s one Representative in America’s House. In another fine example of tastelessness, Mike Castle refused to endorse O’Donnell after his defeat.

They might know the proper bouquet of a fine wine and they might drink tea with pinkies in the air, but these Delaware Blue Blood GOP Ruling Class morons kept any class they ever had carefully hidden. While through the years lifetime candidate Castle voted with the Democrats in the House time and time and time again to the exasperation of the Delaware Republicans and even then none of us boobs ever went on national TV and trashed the man the very night he won the nomination.

It was a perfect storm. Mike Castle had just the prior year voted, with only a few other Republicans out of hundreds, FOR that despised Cap and Trade legislation, a nefarious way to tax us more via our electric bills and all based on that nonsense championed by nutcase Al Gore. We are to believe that only Mike Castle in the House, of all the Republicans, had the good sense to see the beauty of that piece of crap? Castle voted FOR the stimulus, AGAINST the surge in Iraq, FOR that stupid Disclosure Act, in this case only he and the Vietnam guy from New Orleans the only Republicans to vote for it. Castle voted AGAINST the health care but the day right after the vote he came out affirming that he would NOT seek any kind of repeal of the bill. Well if he thought it was bad enough to vote against it, why wouldn’t he get on board to repeal it?

In short, name anything that a Conservative member of the Republican party believed and Castle voted the other way. The Delaware GOP base had been sick of this man for ages and THIS was the year the stars aligned in the sky, the year the abused voters had enough, the year Christine O’Donnell- nominated by the GOP please remember, in 2008 to run for Joe Biden’s old seat so she wasn’t an unknown- got an endorsement by Sarah Palin. In the surge of this Perfect Storm the GOP base of Delaware FINALLY voted Castle out of there.

Because yon ladies and gems, even the most abused amongst us have a point. An abused wife will tell herself that the children will be harmed should she leave her abuser, that her nasty spouse is just misunderstood, that life would be too difficult without him so what’s a black eye now and again? At some point the alternative, in this case the eventual election of Chris Coons as Senator from Delaware, is way better than continuing on under the same pattern or abuse. It’s based on that old saw about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The GOP base decided, rightfully, that it’s best to have the DEMOCRAT vote with the Democrats and let’s try to get a REAL Republican in there.

Well it didn’t work out that way but I bet you ask any Delaware GOP registered voter who voted for O’Donnell you’ll be told of no regrets. Coons is a terrible choice, but no, no a thousand times no, I’d rather have Coons voting for Cap and Trade than the guy supposed to be representing ME!

Castle and Biden, Biden and Castle, Castle and Biden….through the years both of these boobs won elections based on their names. Delaware is a state chock full of tax-abused refugees from nearby New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They voted for the name they knew. Came the Perfect Storm of 2010 and it was time to get rid of he who so betrayed us through the years.

Christine O’Donnell is a perfectly nice, sane and very intelligent woman. She got demonized horribly, often by her own party. Let us not forget that Mike Castle, he of so much class he blinds us, did not endorse her even though she beat him fair and square. I’ve met and talked with Christine several times through the years and here’s my hope that she has a bright future ahead of her for the abuse she took for no other reason than being the choice of us morons in the GOP base in Delaware.

As for Castle, rumor around here has it that he was promised a position in the EPA for the remaining two years he had to complete a full twenty years with the federal government. The conditions of this promise was his vow to not endorse O’Donnell in any fashion. Aha! The EPA, the parent of that awful Cap and Trade legislation, what a coincidence. Also, during the campaign, it was widely rumored that Castle only intended to hold that Senate seat for two years then turn it over to Beau Biden, son of Joe. Ah….now it makes sense. Here’s the scenario:

-Castle votes FOR Cap and Trade in the House, giving Obamer and Pelosi the ability to say the awful bill was passed bipartisan.

-Castle plans to run for Senator to complete that precious 20 years. Joe Biden, Castle’s BFF, protests that his old senate seat is being saved for son, Beau Biden. Castle says that for a little help he will resign after the two years before he achieves the 20 which will give him a big pension or some such I must imagine. Beau Biden says it’s not his time to run for managing a big child molestation case that he’s already doing a terrible job of, so the way is cleared for Castle. The Democrats here in Delaware work closely with the GOP Blue Blood Ruling Class. It’s simple matter to depress the turnout in the Dems and get the GOP Base out to vote FOR nomination of Castle lest some kook the Dems have up for nomination win the thing.

-After the two years at a senator’s pay, which will be the base of his retirement, Biden convinces the Governor of Delaware to appoint Beau Biden to fill the senate seat as Castle steps down.

The whole thing blew up in their face as the Tea Party ascended, an electorate that had had it with Republicans voting like Democrats, mighty Sarah Palin came to town and the plan, as schemed by Biden/Castle, maybe even Karl Rove, fell through the cracks as the GOP base pulled the levers of the voting machines in the swamps of Delaware. Karl Rove, as I repeat rumors as I have a right to do, has it all planned down to dotting the “I’s” and crossing the “t’s”. He’s a big friend of the Bush’s as we can understand. Rove is busy working with positioning Jeb Bush for a presidential run and once Jeb wins, well Rove gets the groovy jobs, but of course. Not that I would accuse these Blue Blood Ruling Class Republicans guilty of such crass behavior as building their own future power base, perish the thought.

I’m not sure how Mike Castle figured into Rove’s plans for Jeb Bush, and not that I have anything against Jeb Bush, but the Delaware result sure got that bundle of sunshine and charisma, Karl Rove, mighty upset against us dumbbells who didn’t do his bidding.

Way I figure, the universe is unfolding as it should. I am disappointed that my candidate didn’t win but I’m pretty sure Christine O’Donnell will have a good and prosperous future. To those who snippily say that O’Donnell was such a bad candidate, I’d point out that Glen Urquhart lost by the same percentage as Christine and it is generally considered that Urquhart ran a wonderful campaign. If COD was such a bad candidate why did Urquhart lose at the same percentage as she did?

As for me, I’m going to keep a close eye on that Blue Blood Ruling Class GOP because there’s a lot of them who got cushy positions and they like it that way. They don’t want peons and morons such as I getting all uppity in our teacups and thinking maybe we should have some say in who represents us. They didn’t support Sharon Angle and they’re not supporting Joe Miller in Alaska.

The Tea Party consists of a bunch of Americans, loosely organized by various groups across the country. It’s a bit like herding cats getting the Middle Class in this country aligned as a mighty force. But we’ve just begun and the Blue Blood Ruling Class of BOTH parties better think again if they think they’re going to destroy our country that THEY might have all the power.

It’s been a lesson in Political Science like you’ll never read in a textbook.

Hell’s Kitchen-A Quick Look

Fox’s web site for this show

Search of all THIS Blog’s entries for this show, prior seasons.

I won’t bother to say much about this cooking series because, frankly folks, if you’ve seen one episode of Chef Ramsey cussing out a bunch of scared chefs then you’ve pretty much seen them all.

Oh there’s some variation. At times Ramsey might take a plate of food and throw it in the trash. The most recent episode, leading up to the final Six Chefs in contention, had Ramsey rather cruelly demanding errant chefs to leave the kitchen. I was mortified for those young people and not at all impressed by Ramsey and his silly melodrama to show what a mean but loving taskmaster he can be.

Hawaii 5-0

IMDB site for this show

Below, a synopsis of the show I watched for this review.

11/1/10-When a Navy SEAL, who's on the run for a murder he swears he didn't commit, takes hostages and safe haven aboard the U.S.S. Missouri memorial battleship, McGarrett must use every SEAL skill in his arsenal to diffuse the situation.

Cast

Episode credited cast:

Alex O'Loughlin ... Steve McGarrett

Scott Caan ... Danny 'Danno' Williams

Daniel Dae Kim ... Chin Ho Kelly

Grace Park ... Kono Kalakaua -governor of Hawaii

I must suppose that somebody thought it was time to bring back that famous series of my childhood, Hawaii 5-0, which is a story of police action in Hawaii. I’m not at all sure why police type stuff in Hawaii would be more interesting in that sort of stuff in Miami….NO WAIT!

Criminal activity at various locales in America does become all the rage. For us mainlanders, Hawaii was once an exotic type of place which few of us had visited. And the cast of the original Hawaii 5-0 was very good. Steve McGarrett was a great character and Jack Lord played him well. And who could forget those famous words “Book ‘em Dano”? This phrase became part of the pop culture lexicon in my younger days.

In this more modern version of this series, Steve McGarrett is a former Navy Seal. I do not remember this being case in the Hawaii 5-0 of the 60’s but at that time I just watched to see Wo Fat and hear Steve tell Danny to book ‘em. It was always a great ending, a chance to shout HURRAY, the comfort of knowing the good guys won again.

The Seal line will have the current day McGarrett needing story lines requiring lots of underwater stuff, as did this show of my viewing.

For we had a former Navy Seal accused of killing his wife and the evidence was pretty damn damning. He was caught running off with a bloody knife right before his wife’s dead body was found.

The story was okay, if one likes that sort of thing. The real killer turned out to be somebody once involved in his wife’s life before she came to America. Her child was kidnapped by these nefarious dudes and finding her was an action-packed video of cop cars and helicoptors, nick of time type of stuff.

I don’t think it’s time for me to become anew a fan of Hawaii 5-0 in this 21st century. My tastes have changed and within ten minutes of this sort of byzantine plot I’d be lost. But I do think this series has possibilities as it was filled with action, had a pretty good story line, should intrigue those who like this sort of thing. In the end the good guys won, Steve McGarrett got justice for an innocent man and saved a passel of hostages.

Watch it if you once enjoyed this series. Young people should watch as it still has its original allure.
