Dog's worst nightmare

Quote of the Day

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" "You're both old," he replied.
*****************************
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

TIDBITS
Beer TIDBITS

Worldwide, 20,000 brands of beer are brewed in 180 styles, from ales, lagers, pilsner and stouts to bitters, cream ales and iced beers.
***
A few years ago, the New Castle Brewery in England brewed 1,000 bottles Tutankhamun Ale from a 3,200-year old recipe found in the sun temple of Queen Nefertiti.
***
Getting dry grain ready for fermentation is called malting. The grain is steeped in water until it sprouts. The sprouting or germination is not allowed to end naturally but is interrupted either by drying or roasting in kilns.
***
The best taste usually is acquired at an alcohol contents of 4.7% ethanol per volume. Less than that results in a beer with a bland taste. More than that and the higher alcohols (butanol, pentanol etc) become overpowering and spoils the taste.
***
Barley has been a grain of choice for thousands of years. The longer the roasting of the malted barley, the darker the beer. Barley, or wheat beers have a sweet taste.
***
Hops are herbaceous climbing vines and look like a cross between pine cores and artichokes. The bitter, dry flavour of hops counterbalance the sweetness of malt.

ELIMINATED THE NIGHT OF 3/21/07:
The Bottom TWO-Stephanie Edwards, Chris Richardson

ELIMINATED-STEPHANIE EDWARDS

Below was written BEFORE the elimination show of 3/21/07 was aired.

"American Idol" 2007-the British Invasion

It would turn out that myself is very much familiar with this music genre although I am just a tad reluctant to admit this expertise as it reveals mine age. But I know the musical mentors on hand the night of the "American Idol" 2007 British invasion, Peter Noone of "Herman's Hermits" and the infamous Lulu.

Thus I was familiar with every song sung the night of 3/20/07 leading up to the elimination show on 3/21/07. After this elimination show, the top ten American Idols 2007 would be set in stone. I pray now that Sanjaya finally gets the boot.

So let us begin with Haley Scarnato's very sexy outfit not to mention her very sexy moves. For she did, yes she did and don't let her deny it, but Haley shook her shoulders just so and with the shaking those young but very perky breasts, encased in a halter type affair and nothing else, also shook along with Haley's shoulders.

Hey, if Haley needs to add a little raunch to grab the coveted title, I say more power to her. Doesn't mean I respect her, understand, for there is a fine line between sweetly sexy and just plain pornographic. I won't say Haley crossed the line but she came mighty close.

Haley sang one of my all time fave songs and give the girl credit, she did a great job. The song was "Tell Him" and it was a perfect choice for Haley. I suspect that Haley's very fine performance plus her sexy moves will bring this girl back a few more times.

Next we have Chris Richardson. Chris sang "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying", a great tune by Gerry and the Pacemakers. It's not that Chris didn't do a good job with the tune. A monkey with a halfway decent voice would shine whilst singing this tune. It was more that this pretty tune is more suited to a Karoake rendition that a national singing competition. Especially when coupled with an average joe like Chris Richardson. I don't expect that Chris will be eliminated on this go round but I don't see him in the top five.

Stephanie Edwards sang yet another of my favorite tunes: "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Here's a song that *I* can sing easily. It doesn't have that wide a range and an alto-type singer could pull it off.

Of course, Stephanie is way better than an alto-type singer and yet I truly think I could have done as good a job as did Stephanie. Way I figger, if Stephanie can't belt it out any better than a middle-age lady in middle America, then she's not likely to be the next American Idol.

Okay, Blake Lewis. Blake brought it back with the Zombies song "Time of the Season".

All I can say is WOW.

Blake took that tune, so very perfect for a creative and talented fellow like Blake, and made it his own. He didn't overdo it with the bee-bops and do-wops and other sound effects Blake can create with his God-given mouth. He did sing the tune of the song that us older folks could enjoy, and he added a few sound effects and fluid dance moves that...

Well all I can say is that I was entertained. And entertaining folks is what we expect American Idols to do.

Ah, Lakisha. Here's a singer with a voice that doesn't quit. She's also a great entertainer without killing us with a need to impress. Lakisha possesses a certain confidence of presence when she sings and I definitely see Lakisha in the top five. I don't think she's going to win the thing but I could be wrong and would not be angry if she does win.

All that said, let's talk about diamonds here. Indeed Lakisha wore a bevy of shiny diamonds as fashion accompaniment to her song choice "Diamonds are Forever". First, Lakisha did something with that song that confused me. On certain phrases her voice changed into some sort of robot type of sound and by me, it was not flattering at all. This voice affectation Lakisha very obviously inserted into her chosen tune tended to distract me although this is a song I am not terribly familiar with.

At any rate, Lakisha I will always love you for your grade A+ response to Simon's silly critique that you looked and sang like you were 45 years older than you are. You told Ryan that Simon's comment didn't bother you at all, that if you look and sound this good 45 years from now you'll be happy as a clam.

YOU GO GIRL! Cause you're right as rain. 45 years from now if you're still belting tunes like you do now, not to mention being as freshly young and pretty as you are, you will be proud and happy. It was a perfect common sensical retort.

I'm not at all sure what was with the hair on the night of the British invasion. For my own personal fave Idol, Jordin Sparks, sported poker-straight hair and yes, it looked nice. In contrast, Lakish sported a curly do and it looked nice as well.

Besides the fetching straight hair, Jordin looked positively enchanting in her sexy but not too much so, black dress. Jordin sang a very dramatic song, "I Who Have Nothing" and indeed, just as Simon lamented, the song was a bit depressing. It's a tune about a woman who is poor but loves a fellow evidently attached to someone with wealth. The singer professes that the one who has nothing possesses more love for the object of her affections than all the wealth on the planet could ever purchase. Jordin sang the tune with appropriate crescendos and decrescendos and at one point she belted out a long note that positively shook the chandeliers but Sparks kept it on pitch. Jordin's going to ride in on the top five and she's my personal fave to win this thing.

Well I never thought I'd still be listening to Sanjaya sing but didn't he sing "You Really Got Me Now"? This was a bit different for Sanjaya, who until this had performing lounge singer type of tunes whilst floating along on the votes of the teeny-boppers. In fact there was a little girl in the audience who, when the camera spanned to her direction, was positively sobbing with song-caused love.

Sanjaya gave his admirer a nice hug. Later viewers were treated to yet another pic of this young girl crying and this time to another singer. Evidently this is a person who is very moved by music. God bless you sweetheart. We all get moved like that from time to time at the sound of a fond tune. You just had your emotions displayed for the entire world to see.

Phil Stacey performed the tune "Tobacco Road". First I didn't like the song, particularly his version. Simon commented that Phil needed a little "grit" in his voice to pull that song off. I think Simon's exactly right. Phil kind of crooned the song and this was a song that didn't need to be crooned.

Second, I don't know what the heck those stains were on the shirt Phil was wearing but stains they were. Or they looked like stains to the viewer out here in audience land. An even more pertinent comment here is why, when all the other contenders were dressed their best, was this contestant out there with a stained shirt and a pair of baggy jeans? If Stacey is making some sort of fashion comment involving his minimalist standards for same, I, for one, am not impressed.

I've given Gina Glocksen a hard time in that past due to her goth look and that pierced tongue. I still despise that pierced tongue and hope she doesn't make American Idol 2007 because of it. What I hope for and reality are very often two different things, however.

On the night of the British invasion, I saw Gina with fresh eyes. She still proudly sported that goth look but her spikey hair and studded clothing was somehow campy and refreshing. Gina was a new kind of performer for American Idol, edgy, punchy and cooly dark. If nothing else, I admired the girl's determination to keep with her image.

Gina sang the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" and goodness this was a song perfect for her. My notes indicate I considered it the most original performance on "American Idol" that I've ever seen. Which is not necessarily a good thing perhaps but I tip my hat to Ms. Glocksen, she carried herself proud and well. The judges mostly liked Gina but Simon declared she was "over-melody" on the song. This is a new musical term and yet I think it's a correct, if a bit nitpicky, criticism of Gina's performance.

Chris Sligh had his glasses back on, thank goodness. Chris sang "She's Not There", a hot, hammering song that was perfect for Chris. I'm not at all sure why Chris was prancing around the stage carrying a microphone stand. I was distracted all to hell worrying if he was going to hit someone or trip while trying to sing and carry that thing. Simon praised Chris' performance profusely and I'd suggest that it was well-deserved praise.

I understood Simon's query to Melinda Doolittle (a last name fond audience members changed to "DOLOTS") if she was as nice as she seems. Melinda sang "As Long As He Needs Me", a powerful tune and Melinda had the vibes to carry it off. I thought Melinda looked terrific, I thought her performance was satisfactory but nowhere near her best and far less than several of the performances that same night. A couple of times I saw spit flying from Melinda's mouth. Melinda needs to work on the saliva a bit.

But yes, as to Simon's inquiry, it does seem that Melinda projects an innocent wide-eyed look of childishness and naivite. I sure wonder if this effect isn't put on. When Melinda says "thank you", she tends to fold her hands and bow in almost a Japanese manner. If all one can complain about is a contender who is "too nice" it is a bit small. I think Melinda's innocence is refreshing, may it stay with her forever.
