Quote of the Day
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you'll never walk alone."........

"American Idol 2007"-Andy Williams Night

It was a real treat to see long-time favorite Andy Williams still up and about and helping American Idol hopefuls along the road to victory. The Idol hopefuls, for their part, certainly practiced and refined their performances as evidenced by the final result.

The evening began with Blake Edwards performing "Mac the Knife" and how can anyone with ears not like this? First, Blake looked like a fellow from the 50's both in his garb and moves. Second, well Blake's a great singer and he's seldom handed anything he can't sing and sing well. Judge Randy said that Blake was a bit pitchy at first but it seems that Randy always offers this criticism. Myself heard no pitchiness, just the smooth vocals of my male fave this year, Blake Edwards.

Phil Stacey sang "Night and Day" and the judges as well as my own self noted that there was no joy in the song. I think this is mostly because Stacey himself looked joyless right from the start of the tune. I don't know why this is except perhaps that the fellow was wearing all black and much as I hate to say this, Stacey and his bald head sometimes look like something that escaped from the crypt.

Then he didn't smile or act happy as he sang about his grand love for his lady, night and day. Goodness that sentiment is worth at least one smile.

Paula remarked that Phil was "reminescent of a young Frank Sinatra" which caused Simon to hoot and I did too. Phil Stacey is no more a young Frank Sinatra than I am. Frank Sinatra, for one thing, had hair on his head and for another, smiled when he sang a happy song.

Melinda Doolittle sang "I've Got Rhythm" and my thought during the entirety of her performance is the breadth of this singer's talent and vocals. All of the judges raved except Simon. By me Simon's just holding back as it's been obvious that Simon sees Melinda as a real contender to win this thing.

Chris Richardson sang a tune I didn't recognize but besides, something weird was going on with the sound. Chris' voice was too soft to hear then would rise slightly to hearable but the logic and continuity of the lyrics were lost on me for almost the first 45 seconds of the tune. After that the sound evened out but by then my ears were tuned out. I don't know what was going on with that sound thing and I suppose it could have either been my ageing ears or my television. The judges all commented that this performance was possibly Richardson's best ever so they evidently weren't knocked out cold by weird sound stuff. All that being said, the judges effusiveness might save Richardson for another week but this fellow is not going to win this thing.

My female fave for this year's American Idol 2007 is Jordin Sparks, a winsome adolescent of great talent and sparkling personality. For Andy Williams week, Jordin sang "On a Clear Day". I noticed Jordin had her curls back and in full force.

I am no expert on this sort of thing but I noticed that Jordin took very loud breaths throughout this song. Remembering again that my sound thingie could be messed up but those breaths that all singers must take from time to time were very loud and evident as Jordin sang this tune. It tended to distract from the pretty melody as well as Jordin's sweet voice. Whatever the case with the breaths, Judge Randy praised Jordin handily while Simon thought the song was just "okay".

God Bless America Gina Glocksen performed and the girl is a pretty thing, not that I could tell with that dark Goth look she'd been sporting for so long. Gina sang the tune "Smile" and, in fact, her smile looked so much brighter and wholesome with brighter and cleaner make-up. I think Gina's going to be voted off this show soon. Maybe her new refreshing look will keep her around longer. Either she or Haley will be the next female off this year's contest as I predict.

Next up the beloved Sanjaya and gotta love this guy, gotta love him. Every year American Idol has some ongoing scandal or another. In this year 2007 Sanjaya is the subject of the late night comics.

Sanjaya sang "Cheek to Cheek" or perhaps the correct title is "Heaven". Whatever, Sanjaya's cute little ploy of dancing with Judge Paula was cuter than all get out. His smooth hair style of the week add another dimension to the phenomina known as Sanjaya-2007.

Haley Scarnato's claim to fame is her fine body and she dresses it well and to the best effect. Which is not to suggest that Haley can't sing because she can. She's up against Lakisha and Melinda and to just these two Haley doesn't hold a candle, much less any dark horse candidates in her same league.

Haley adorned her body with a very short and low cut heavenly green dress that aptly showed off all of her assets. My thought throughout her whole performance of "Ain't Misbehavin'" was that the main thing carrying Haley is her looks. Judge Simon's only comment about Haley's performance was that she had great legs.

Lakisha rounded things out on the night of Andy Williams and she wrapped it up perfectly. Lakisha sang "Stormy Weather" and there was no better song on earth in the Andy Williams' genre that this girl could have picked that would have been better for her voice. My notes indicate that I heard a very discordant note but perhaps my sound thingie was acting up. I know that Lakisha looked lovely and that tune was written to be sung by her.

BEST PERFORMANCE-Melinda Doolittle
BEST DRESS-HAley Scarnato
BEST SONG CHOICE FOR VOICE-Lakisha Jones
WORST PERFORMANCE-Sanjaya, as always, Phil Stacey next
BIGGEST SURPRISE OF NIGHT-Gina Glocksen's refreshing un-Goth look
MY GUESS AS TO NEXT ELIMINATION-Sanjaya, if not-Phil Stacey
