Project Runway All Stars 2012-Casanova, Finally, Goes Home. Are Emilio's Lips Real?

Pic of Day

It's Anthony Ryan and Emilio all the time on this autumn 2012 series of Project Runway All Stars.

Joshua had a few winning looks, or close to them, of late. But he's a drama queen and a bit snarky. In the most recent challenge as of this writing, Joshua designed some kind of weird bikini short set thing and it was ugly. The judges were captivated by the outfit's "bralet" but I thought it looked stupid.

The challenge the week of the Joshua bikini was to make an outfit out of Christmas decorations but to NOT make the outfit look "Christmassy". Emilio (did he have his lips plumped or was he really born that way?) came up with a purple dress he wove from holiday ribbons. It was quite fetching.

The prior week's challenge involved constructing outfits from some kind of modern fabric with a cool esthetic design. Emilio than concocted a billowy orange creation that flowed beautifully on the model.

Uli's design copied by Anthony Ryan
Anthony Ryan dances around running away with this thing. He creates what looks to me like a direct copy of Uli's design for the outfits made from "unconventional" materials. It is pretty but I note that other contenders noticed the resemblance in design as well.

Casanova, a really dumb name, is gone, and even with that he was a bit beyond his time to go. He had a non-serious mannerism about him and I really hate his name.

Keep following this Blog. There are seven contenders left and we will be honing in on the winners very soon.

Project Runway All Stars 2012 Begins With Drama Queens Who Return

Pic of Day

Project Runway All Stars-begins a new run and first things first, bring back the Drama Queens. For now, Joshua wins the biggest Drama Queen award. Then, of course, we have Casanova, is that really the name this man's silly parents gave him at birth?

There's the oddball female designer, including Suede, another odd name, and Wendy Pepper. Suede is more remarkable for her biker demeanor with Wendy Pepper coming off as the Mary Poppins sort.

Peach, goodness, what on earth does Judge Michael Kors have against this contender? Peach began an admittedly rambling description of her design. Abruptly Kors waved her shush with his open hand and told her ...never mind...he didn't want to hear her diatribes.

I was taken aback in that while Peach was digressing to childhood teachers and a manner of unnecessary minutiae, Kors seemed a bit nasty with his put down.

At any rate, there's an interesting stable of designers on this series...pics below.

As for the first few episodes of this new competition, there's been some design challenges. A more recent design challenge had the returning contenders whipping up an outfit for a disco era female. The stilly green thing was submitted by Ivy. I thought it was laughable. The judges loved it.

I thought Emilio submitted the prettiest frock for the challenge but it wasn't the winner.

The disco challenge winner was submitted by Uli, below.

Wendy Pepper, aka Mary Poppins, submitted the ugliest design of all and was sent home.

Below is some kind of silly short/dress combo that looks very childish to me. However, as is often the case, the judges loved it.

For now, no predictions for winner.

Keep an eye on Casanova and maybe Ivy's got some fit and flair, we shall see.

Drivel: Addiction

We had a monitor problem in alaHouse. The one connected to my laptop (not attached, mind; I have a sort of a docking station set up and there's a real monitor connected to it) suddenly turned shades of pink one afternoon. It flickered that way briefly and then went back to normal. I promptly forgot it had done that.

The monitor on the computer in the Green Room, our "anybody can use it" PC, has had an instant reset disease for quite awhile. You're playing Diablo and poof! the monitor turns off. Swiftly, it boots itself back on, but sometimes not fast enough to keep your character from dying while you couldn't see to fight.

Then one day in the middle of a game, it turned off and didn't come back on. That was massively inconvenient, but I switched to playing on the laptop and I was okay. . .

. . . Until about three days later when that monitor again turned pink. And stayed that way. Nothing looked right in pink, and most important to my daily life, I couldn't tell which email in my inbox was unread. Those are usually a shade of green compared to the read email's black. In pink, they looked the same.

I called Dell, which is never pleasant. This time, though, the rep helped me without meaning to: as he looked for my account he said it sounded like a connection issue. Then he asked if he could put me on hold. So, while I was on hold, I disconnected and reconnected every cord on the monitor. Poof! Back to normal colors. I had to wait for the guy to come back on so I could tell him he'd fixed my issue. I think he was as surprised as I was.

The off monitor was harder. Harry and I went to the store and got a replacement. We needed the same size and the only one the store had was an HP, not Dell. Shouldn't matter, right? We took the HP home.
The online world of Diablo is full of little kids.

Modern electronics require a six-year-old to figure out, and there are times when I do wish we'd had children. The new monitor came with only a pictograph sheet of instructions. No words, just hieroglyphic diagrams. Assemble this. Plug this here. Attach that. Connect to the PC. Start the CD.

We followed the instructions, and watched a black screen as the CD loaded up. Then, nothing. I pressed enter. Nothing. I pressed tab and then enter. Nothing. I popped the CD out and put it back again. Still nothing.

Apparently it does matter if you attach an HP monitor to a Dell computer.

I brought the CD in to the Computer Room and put it in the laptop. It ran immediately and on my no-longer-pink monitor I could see that the first screen wanted me to choose my language. I could find no way to do so without using the mouse. It seemed there was no way to get the program to run - install the new HP driver - without being able to *see* the screen. (Would it have worked on an HP?)

We ended up swapping monitors - the no-longer-pink monitor is now attached to the Green Room PC and I have the new HP connected to my laptop. It's working good!

That brief stint of working with limited monitor coverage reminded me how addicted I am to video games.

In here, on the laptop, I often play something mindless, like Bejeweled 3. In the Green Room, I play Diablo, which doesn't take much concentration but I do have to pay attention at least some of the time.

And sometimes. . . sometimes I play Diablo in both rooms.

Seriously. I missed that ability when the Green Room monitor was dead. :-(

I can see you're trying to figure out how I can play the same game on two computers in different rooms, so here, let me explain.

The online world of Diablo is full of little kids. Sometimes you can tell you're playing a game with kids because of the names they've chosen for their characters. Once I searched for dungeon treasure with TightAsss, BigBlueBoobs and HungryHorns. (My character's name? I don't remember which one I was using in that particular game, but I do have my own set of names. My current favorites are OrthodoxDruid and Fiat_Lux - "Let there be light.")

Sometimes you can tell you're playing a game with kids because they have no manners and don't know how to play with others. One guy ran away from the group only to come screaming back with a bunch of axe-wielding goats following him. Our entire party got decimated. And maybe you remember the sorceress from Drivel: PK and Crippleware? Quite a few of the players are thieves.

If you're lucky, and you play in groups a lot, you build up a set of "friends" you can trust to hold stuff while you change characters. If my high-level druid finds a good set of claws, for instance, he would want to give it to my assassin, who uses claw weapons. Trouble is, I can't run them both in the same game on the same PC. So, friends. "Hold this," and I switch characters and receive my new treasure from a friend's character.

Make sense?

Except I'm not that lucky and I don't play in groups much. I have six people or so who I trust in a Diablo game, but I rarely see any of them online.

And here's the next problem . . . when your character is still low-level, he or she has some trouble defeating the section bosses. In an online group, no issue. However, there, all the other players get any treasure because your character is low-level. A friend with a higher-level character can help you out pretty easily, and they tend to be much more generous with treasure.

But again, that requires that one of your friends are online when you are.

Enter the addict's solution: two PCs running the game in two rooms. My characters have to be on different accounts, but that's no problem since I have two accounts with eight characters on each one. Here's how the "Hold this for me" scenario works:

I am playing a character in the Green Room, where the computer responds better, and I find something I want to give to a different character. I boot up Diablo on the Computer Room PC, choose the character I want to receive the gift, and use that character to join the Green Room's character's online game.

Here's where it's a bit inconvenient. The two characters have to agree to "trade." One initiates by asking the other, "Hey, you wanna trade?" Then I have to change rooms to answer, "Sure, let's trade." The trading window opens between the two characters.

The one with my new toy puts it in the trade window and checks the "You take it" box. I have to change rooms to check the box on the other character's trading window.

This gives the item to the receiving character and closes the window. I can move several things at once; the number of items is limited by size and room in the receiving character's inventory.

Overall, the process works pretty well. However, if I want to help a lower level character defeat a boss, that gets tricky. Bosses don't wait for you to change rooms before attacking.

Take the trade scenario and speed it up. In battle, I have to run from room to room. This is where the real world and the fantasy world collide . . .

Low level character has to enter the dungeon first, because if the high level kills the boss quickly, the low level gets no credit for the quest. Useless! But . . . the low level, entering a boss's lair alone, is easy meat.

So, I put the low level character in, run to the other room, put the high level character in, and hope that's the limit to the running. Except it usually isn't. The boss moves around, and usually gets too close to the low level, or gets too far away. Too far, and again the low level won't get credit. A typical battle requires me to change rooms four or five times.

Man, no wonder I'm losing weight.

Enter the real world. The dog (and occasionally one of the cats) really, really, really loves it when I'm playing Diablo in two rooms. The race from one to the other is most certainly being done purely for his benefit, and he definitely wants a piece of that action.

There's something truly wrong when you can't save your character from the big multi-armed boss because a Shetland Sheepdog was in your way.

Any other addicts out there who can relate? Be warned: if the person who keeps asking you questions at work starts to look like an axe-wielding goat or if you look over at the other cars stopped at the traffic light and think if you could just move this blue one over and all three blue cars would disappear, you've been playing that video game too much.

Bachelor Ben's True Love Begins Rockier Than Any Bachelor Ever; Project Runway All Stars Has a Winner

Pic of Day
Village Built from Snow

Bachelor Ben Picks Courtney But It's Rocky Right From the Start
First, I believe this bachelor series was almost entirely scripted, that Ben never really took to any of the contenders, that Courtney was more script than substance and I for sure believe that Courtney and Ben will, or already have, broken as soon as the Director yelled "Cut" on the "After the Rose" ceremony.

Of course ALL of the Bachelor(ette) series are scripted to some extent.  There is also the outside chance that the man or woman offering themselves up for the picking will actually meet the love of their life, get married and parent many children over the years.
It's not likely and statistics indicate this is so.

Sure a bevy of 25 plus contenders all offered up for one person seems like a fine pool of likely mates but not really.  This series, recall, has contenders from all over the country.  So a fellow from California could, for example, meet a beauty love of his life from New York.  After all the episodes he might pick her and from then on the logistics of it all can overwhelm a burgeoning but tender love affair.

You can believe, though you'll never see it aired on  The Bachelor(ette), that some of the contenders, probably a lot of them, don't especially care for the offered person but they play along because they get free trips and such.  The contenders always have to act like they're in a perpetual state of adoration of the then proffered Bachelor(ette) as it would not do to have the contenders get on the televised waves and lambaste the Bachelor(ette) for having an awful temper or bad breath.  Believe if you want that all the contenders adore the subject of the series with no reservations as meanwhile I got a bridge to sell you who so believe.
For the record, I think Ben has another honey back home, that he'll somehow make the disconnect from Courtney very publicly and Ben or Courtney, or even Lindzi, will soon be Dancing With the Stars.
The Courtney drama was a good one.  Well the producers had to have some drama in the show because you can only watch Ben Flajnik kiss so many females before you've had enough already.

Scripted dramas are the norm for this show and any reality show watcher knows this.  Scripted does not mean, and should not be construed as, fake.  The scripting in these sorts of reality shows usually involves taking some existing fact or condition and playing it up.  Courtney is likely not the nicest female on the planet.  There's usually some really bad dude or dudette hiding with a smile on their face within the ranks.  All the guys or gals in the ranks know who the bad guy is but it's always difficult to get the starry-eyed Bachelor(ette) to see the truth.
It's a love story as hold as the times.  Vienna was a nasty dudette.  Ashley got herself involved with some dude who only wanted to be a country-western singer.  Ben fell for Courtney although she was considered the Cruella Deville of the contenders for Ben's love.
In the "After the Rose" show, host Chris Harrison told Ben that some tabloid pictures had surfaced showing him getting right cozy with some gal who was NOT Courtney.  Ben denied it all, said they were old friends, that he still loved Courtney though they'd broken up right after he gave her the engagement ring but he still loved her.
Turned out those tabloid pictures had Ben kissing this "old friend" quite unlike most of us would kiss and old friend, including a  fond pat on the butt of his old friend.
Ben then gave Courtney BACK the engagement ring, very public, on the show.
Of course this too was scripted or are you still interested in that bridge I got to sell.
Courtney is going to go places and her name and face need to be kept out there.  As for Ben, I don't believe for a second that the lady to whom he gave the friendly butt slap is just an old friend.  I suspect, just a hunch, that she's the lady Ben kept under wraps in case his grand quest to find love everlasting should fail once again.
Give it a few months.  Ben and Courtney shall break up, will officially announce it.

Project Runway All Stars Soon to Have Winner-an Overview
As of this writing we were down to three contenders.  The finale was last night, is done and MONDO WON!

It's been a grueling group of episodes.

There were three left: Michael, Mondo and Austin.
I thought Michael would win this thing.
Now that NBC has the new, bright and vibrant Fashion Star  I'm not sure I could stand another drawn out Project Runway series, especially with has-been losers.
I think there's a little too much scripting/drama and angst going on in Project Runway.  I understand that showing some of the competition, the jealousy, the interaction is a big part of the story.  But Project Runway plods along, plodding, plodding, plodding.

Some of Michael's collection below.
Mondo's collection below

Couple of Austin pieces.  His wedding dress was beautiful.

NBC's Fashion Star has happening music, the Runway fashion show gets right on.  There's angst in that show as are in most of these live reality competition shows.
The most recent episode of Project Runway All Stars 2012, "Leading up to the Final Runway" or some sort, had that hideously childish Mondo suffering some kind of depression.  I almost, after many long minutes of hearing about Mondo's depression, clicked the channel, the hell with it.

I am sure I will enjoy the next fresh series of Project Runway, with all new competitors.

Now that he won give Mondo some happy pills for God's sake!

Project Runway All Stars-Coming Down the Runway to a Winner, Updates, Photos, Predictions

PIC OF DAY

There's been three interesting fashion challenges since I last wrote about Lifetime's Project Runway All Stars.

The challenges included designing a look for a rich woman attending a Broadway opening, designing an outfit based on the colors of selected country flags and in the most recent episode as of this writing, designing an avant garde outfit involving actual lights integrated with the fabric.

As I figure, avant garde must mean "way out" or "bizarre" or perhaps "something only Lady GaGa would wear".

Still and so, the all star designers met the challenges, some not so much.

There are four contenders left and we'll be watching the finale. We do, of course, have some well formed opinions as to who has a clue and who does not.

The four remaining contenders consist of Austin, Mondo, Kenley and Michael. Only Kenley is female, the rest are all male.

We begin with a short look at some of the fashions as submitted by the contenders over various challenges, just to get an idea of what the designers were coming up with.

Above is a look designed and submitted by Kenley and it's cute. But is it really the stuff of grand design? What it is is a jumpsuit type of affair that would look great on she with a perfect figure. The challenge was, I know, to design a look for a season and Kenley has the summer time of year.

Since there were then eight contenders remaining, each season had submissions by two designers. The one in the background here was submitted by Mondo. Of the two, the judges chose Kenley's polka dot jumpsuit. The judges said Mondo's design was too confusing when paired with accessories that were not well matched. Still, in review, Kenley tends to be safe and a bit boring. This is not the stuff of Project Runway All Star winners.

Above is a submission by Austin for the same challenge. The design in the background was submitted by Kara. Their season was spring and again, it's okay. Of the two the judges chose the spring look of Kara in the background. I think Austin's look is better but again, it looks like something I would put together and I'm no Project Runway All Star.

The above designs, on the left, are winter submissions, the right is fall. Of the winter look, contender Jerell submitted the one in the front. Michael submitted the one in the background. Of the two the judges chose Jerell design. You will note, as did the judges, the similarity in look of both of these design submissions.

On the fall submission, Mila has the background submission with Rami designing the outfit with the blue top. The judges chose Mila's design over Rami's but the issue is moot. Neither of these two contenders are part of the top four.

We move on to the fashion challenge of the flags. This was a most interesting challenge in that the contenders were charged with designing an outfit based on a country's flag.

Mondo won this challenge with his rather boring plain black dress above. The back of that dress was decorated with yellow and green strips, yellow and green being part of the colors of the Jamaican flag. Mila had New Guinea. Hers is that awful looking black and red thing-right. For the record, Mila got sent home for this, as well she should have been. Mondo won for his design and it is sophisticated, indeed. The back of his dress is artful with those diagonal stripes, enough to have given it class.

I know these fashion shows are not likely to have designs upon the runway showing off soft cardigans and button down blouses. It takes some courage to go off the beaten track. But Mila's thing, dear Lord, what woman would go out in that thing? It might be a good Halloween outfit for someone wanting to dress up as perhaps a schizophrenic or one possessed of multiple personalities.

Finally we had what is called the "avant garde" design challenge. Avant Garde, as I am to understand, means nutty, kooky, bizarre. Giving it a really cool french name is a way of making the concept just your normal everyday.

The five remaining designers were, for this challenge, given a budget for both hardware supplies as well as for material. Heh. Well they needed batteries and cords and lights of all sorts, for the challenge required that they fashion an outfit that shone from the light as well as from their own handsome design.

Austin was the winner of this project, above, which was kind of cool and was my personal favorite. Jerell got sent home for his design -right That thing reminds of that famous lampshade in "It's a Wonderful Life", the one made of a female leg with a shade at the top.

In fact, Jerell covered his model's legs with some sort of long black skirt thing that probably contributed to my association with the lamp.

So there we have it four remaining and I do have some predictions.

I don't see Kenley winning this thing. She might go on to fashion fame of some sort for she is talented. But she doesn't have a cutting edge mentality. Kenley designs for women like me. Which is great. But women like me do not go to grand galas. Women like me shop at J.C. Penny. Where Kenley, as I suspect, will be a designer of clothes.

I don't see Mondo, the little cutie pie looks like he should be playing second base on the Little League, either as a winner. My haphazard records do not have Mondo winning all that many runway competitions although he does well most times.

As I see it the contest will come down to Austin and Michael. If you held a gun to my head I'd have to give my predictive nod to Michael. My personal fave is Austin although his queerness is way overdone at times. Somebody tell Austin that we get that he's a homosexual, enough already.

But Austin does have an offbeat style about him that is becoming and speaks volumes about his creativity.

My mind says it will be Michael; my heart wants it to be Austin.

Colorful Confections and Clothes from Strangers

PIC OF DAY
They told him to smile for the camera
The fashion challenges on Project Runway All Stars continue to get both more difficult and a little bit offbeat. Contenders continue to get eliminated and the possible winner begins to emerge.  As of this writing, there are nine PR All Star contenders left.  So far none of the remaining female contenders impress me enough to predict a winner.  Of the male contenders left, I'd tentatively suggest that Rami and Austin seem to be the most consistant and if I had to make a guess of a winner of these two I'd go with Rami.  Austin gets a bit full of himself sometimes and on some challenge I predict it will be his downfall.

In the latest episode in January the challenge was for the contenders to design an outfit based on a flavor, using the color and design of the frock to show the contender's interpretation of the flavor.

Most of the time I agree with the judges on their choices regarding bad and good but sometimes I am on a different planet than the judges.  The judges loved Mila's entry, which she called milk and sour cherries.  I thought the dress looked sour all right and I can't imagine any happening young woman would wear such a thing.  The judges didn't put Rami's design in the bottom three but they put it in the top three either.  I thought it was the best of all the entrees for this challenge.

Another design I quite liked and thought should be at the top was Austin's entree which he called "vanilla Madagascar".  I thought it very feminine and it was one of my faves.  The judges declared Austin's design safe but it wasn't in the top three.  I did agree with the judges on Anthony's "Green Tea" submission, which they put in the bottom three.  The top was confusing, the overall design not pleasing to the eyes.

Two designs I agreed with the judges completely.  April submitted a blueberry confection, a perfectly good choice for a color.  But her skirt was uneven.  She'd ran low on material and as a result the back of the dresses' hem was shorter than the front.  Michael submitted the design declared the winner by the judges.  It was also my favorite, a grapefruit concoction as he called it.

The first episode in February had the contender's going to a nearby park, selecting strangers, and asking for the clothes off their back.  The challenge had rules, as they all do though the viewers aren't given the minutiae of the boring details.  In this challenge the rules were violated and it mattered very much.

Anthony's violation of the rules surely saved Michael from being "out" because that thing submitted by Michael is hideous.  What the hell was he thinking?  It looks like women's underwear!  Not that Anthony's submission was all that pretty with essentially a scarf for a blouse.  But Anthony didn't use the required amount of material from the stranger whose outfit he acquired.  As I understand it, Anthony only used the "blouse" material and the red pants were from purchased material.

The judges like Austin's submission of a black edgy biker type outfit.  I think it has entirely too many zippers and froufrou to be elegant.  The winner of this challenge was Mondo.  I do think his design is clever and there had to be some difficulty putting this geometric thing together.  Despire Mondo's efforts, I'd never pick such a complicated design to wear.

Rami's outfit was my favorite.  The judge's liked it enough as well to put it in the top three but I think it should have been the winner.

Rami even added strips of fabric that matched the blouse to the pocket slash the the leg hems.  The furl on the blouse is pretty and the addition of the black vest is just perfect.

So the eight left continue on and we'll be continuing on watching as well.

Keep an eye on Rami.

Project Runway All Stars-Dressing Miss Piggy; She With Dirty Hair Sent Home

Pic of the Day

Made from recycled horse shoes!

Miss Piggy Loves Pink

Under the guise of dressing muppet Miss Piggy, the fashion design all stars were charged with making a happening, glitzy dress fit for an evening at the opera. We did, of course, have Miss Piggy as a judge, you gotta laugh at this bit of serendipity.

Miss Piggy liked the color pink and she likes her fashion full of bling. The designers, ever the wiser in terms of fashion design, worked to make a dress that Miss Piggy would love to wear to her then upcoming movie premiere. The night of the Miss Piggy challenge there were still 11 contenders left.

Austin is the flamboyant, cocky, a bit over-confident contender who by me stands a good chance to win this thing. Thus I was disappointed in his design of a dress that looked like underwear with huge bows at the side that did nothing to enhance the dress and everything to enhance the hips. I can't imagine what he was thinking, especially making a design for someone Named Miss Piggy. It would turn out that Miss Piggy did not like the bows on the hips touch either. Austin's submission was one of the bottom three.

Miss Piggy loved contender Rami's entry, which was a pink polka dot affair. I didn't like it at all. The judges had mixed emotions about the design. Miss Piggy summed it up as looking as if a candy store exploded. She had it exactly right but by me that was why I didn't like it. The judges pointed out the problem with polka dots on fabric and sure enough there were a couple of polka dots on the frock that didn't not match at the seams. Rami's design was one of the top three.

Gordana, who still needed her hair washed, submitted some sort of shorty pajama type of thing that looked like something my 8 year old granddaughter would wear to bed. It was a perfectly awful thing. I will never understand how Gordana got to be part of this "all star" show in that she was not a good designer during her season and hadn't gotten any better. It would turn out, not at all to my surprise, that Gordana got sent home the night of the Miss Piggy challenge.

Mondo submitted some kind of ersatz tie-dyed type of look, a purple silvery fabric used to make a top and a short skirt with scalloped edges. Miss Piggy liked this design.

Anthony's dress was a black thing heavily adorned with black feathers around the west and going up the bust line. It was well constructed and very original. It was my favorite dress.

April too entered a black outfit that I thought also resembled a pair of child's shorty pajamas. It wasn't the ugliest entry but it was not a winner.

Jerell's dress was pink with feather shoulder adornment that was clever but not overpowering. His fabric was swingy and festive with a frilly hemline.

didn't much like Kara's submission. It was a short black dress, tight to the body with some sort of exposed midriff and triangular straps. It would have been a very clever entry for a less festive occasion than a movie premiere.

Kenley came through with a pink giraffe striped type affair that Miss Piggy did, of course, adore. IT had a flared skirt with crinolines underneath, a low cut bodice, and was handsomely topped with a head decoration that matched the crinolines. The judges snarked that it would help hide Miss Piggy's ears, which insulted the muppet just a tad as she evidently thinks she has fine ears. Kenley's concoction was one of the top three.

Michael won that night's design with his entry of a short, tight to the figure glossly patterned fabric that was adorned on the front with a big perpendicular bow from waist to bustline.

Mila came through with some sort of 60's black Twiggy type of dress that was nowhere near the sort of thing one wears to a movie premiere. Mila's silly entry was one of the bottom three.

Project Runway All Stars airs on Lifetime, Thursday nights, at 9 pm.
