American Idol 2012 Hometown Visit, Finale This Week. Judges Demand Jessica Win.

So Phillip Phillips is the new American Idol, God Bless this young man, I wish him luck.

It's been another good year for this very successful Fox series.

I do grouse from time to time but for all the imitation singing reality shows, none has had quite the impact on American culture as has American Idol.

I'd written on an America's Got Talent review that these talent reality shows were, with the passage of time, finding their niches in terms of talent attracted.

These past few years, and as is the case with Jessica Sanchez-runner up American Idol 2012 , we have a generation of young people who have grown up with American Idol. Thus the winners are increasingly younger, like Jessica and Jordin Sparks before her.

I suppose that a Jessica or Jordin knew they were singers at an early age. They probably lived their pre-adolescent and early adolescent years watching American Idol, dreaming of the day that they too would sing upon that stage, artfully costumed, backed by professional singers and a first class band, surrounded by an astounding set, all to showcase their beautiful vocals.

The age to audition for AI is 16. The Jessicas and Jordins likely recruited support from their families through the years, promises to take them to the city of auditions for the year they will be eligible to take their try in front of the AI judges.




Thus American Idol will cull the best singers, those who grew up waiting for their chance to win the prize. The Jordins and Jessicas won't be breathlessly waiting for X Factor to come to a nearby town.

Other singing competitions such as The Voice or the X Factor will be the realm of the older singers or of singers whose preferred genre is one not as mainstream as American Idol. A rapper, for example, will not last long into the top ten on American Idol. But the X Factor seems to encourage the musical genres on the edges of American mainstream. The Voice will be the catch basin for all singing talent that doesn't keyhole into the top two.

Even as I type the premiere of yet another musical talent reality show is set to premiere in a fortnight: Duets. Likely there will be others. Using a popular term of this era, likely they will all "evolve" to talent shows for preferred musical genres or singer age groups.

America's Got Talent had a couple of winners that were singers. Those winners were mostly out of the mainstream of American Idol talent. Jackie Evancho was only 6 years old when she sang on AGT and a few other singing winners were considerably older than either Jessica or Jordin.

AGT grows increasingly popular through the years as the talent show for talent not, ahem, normally considered "talent". I think of a recent contender, accepted and moved on by the AGT judges, whose claim to fame as it were is the ability to have his reproductive parts beaten on by cinder blocks, wooden boards or even kicked by human feet.

Congratulations to Phillip and know that someday, like Kelly Clarkson you might be the celebrity partner on Duets or Clay Aikin you will contend to be the next Celebrity Apprentice. For celebrity today is just having a known face, generally a televised one.

To me American Idol will always be the beginning of the concept of equal opportunity for the talented. A Liza Minnelli would have been ejected from AI first round. Then, once upon a time, many of the singers of questionable talent made their fame based on their parents.

Dear Lord, has anybody heard Lisa Presley sing?

I rest my case.

I've never seen an American Idol contender so carelessly thrown under the bus as has been Hollie, sweet Hollie, cute Hollie, unpretentious Hollie.

Those judges, folks, they loved Jessica and may I remind that Jessica did get voted off once by the American public. J-Lo, Steve and Randy scorned us greatly, smacking our collective hands and saving Jessica before she finished her swan song.

It was a bit disgraceful from my eye's line but so it was.

Jessica does have a tremendous set of vocal cords but goodness she's way too young for all of this.

Now I understand that at this point a child of 16 like Jessica, has been able since a very young age able to watch the TV and dream when their day would come.

Jessica Sanchez probably decided around age 7 or so that she would one day be the American Idol.

This does not mean it should be bestowed upon her at age 16. I do understand that American Idols, for as long as the series continues, will probably be very young, what with an entire generation now reaching puberty having known American Idol all of their lives.

American Idol will be where the best singers, those who were singing loudly at age 6, were performing before audiences at age 8, were winners of talent shows by age 12. For the less than the best there will be X Factor, The Voice, America's Got Talent...like that.

Jessica fits this mold and somehow she, and those silly judges, see the American Idol title as belonging to them and have seen it this way since age 6.

Still and so, if American votes Jessica to win this thing, no matter how browbeaten by a panel of really stupid judges, then I shall respect the vote of the people.

I'll not mention Jessica's total inability to even walk right in a high heel, her herky jerky dance moves, her lack of any great charisma….she's got a great voice and likes to make her voice growl. That's all that matters.

As for Phillip, Phillip and Phillip inc….he's cute, goodness he's cute. He's every pubescent adolescent girl's fantasy of the guy for them. But he sings about a range of five notes, they all sound the same yet still his curls glisten.

Joshua, well I dunno, Joshua. Sometimes Joshua sings a great tune, one he doesn't doctor up so much that nobody but the listeners notice that they call it screaming what he's doing, not singing. Yet sometimes Joshua sings with a deep throaty voice that is beautiful enough, he needs to stop there.

I'm supposing Jessica will win this thing. Phillip of the curly hair will be second. Joshua will come in third.

So the American Idol 2012 episode aired on 5/2/12 was so skewed in terms of results that I don't know up from down.

But first, some interesting information from eliminated contender Colton Dixon.
Seems he was warned about being "too Christian".

Now Colton did sing at least one Christian song that I remember off the top of my head.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be some kind of shocking story but if so, well it's not.

I don't think it's a good idea to go broadcasting your religion too often and too widely for much of any reason. I would think that a word to the wise would probably have any musical mentor advising an American Idol candidate not to overdue any religious aspect, be it Jewish, Christian or even Muslim.

In fact there was another contender who sang a Christian song, "Go Light Your Candle" so it's not unusual to sing such a tune.

Colton was heavily involved in Tweeting and Facebooking and there was concern about his involvement with his religion in these endeavors. It's not clear what kind of "threat" Colton received except the article states that AI producers only warned him that if he concentrated too much on his religion he wouldn't have a prayer of winning the competition.

Well duh, that's very true, number one, and two, it's not like Dixon was threatened with expulsion or anything.

American Idol is about singing and performing. It's not about religion or even politics. For a contender to delve too much into those sorts of things, at least beyond a casual mention, is just not wise. It's not rocket science.

Next we delve into Randy Jackson's fine fashion.  This week he sports some kind of sea shell "jewelry" that, well, I dunno.

For the performances on the night themed "British Invasion", man I just can't figure those results.

In fairness I must state that Hollie is my favorite this year though I know she shall soon be gone. She's been in the bottom three five times.

I thought, however, that with her rendition of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", a challenging song that she did amazingly well.

Skylar was sent home and she was living also on borrowed time. Again Skylar sang "It Ain't Me" and she knocked it out of the park.




While the beloved Jessica wobbled around the stage on high heels looking like a child wearing her mother's shoes. Jessica sang "Rolling On a River" and attempted to do some kind of dance thing while she wore a ridiculous tight dress way to old for this 16 year old. Jessica also joined Skylar and Hollie in Jackie Wilson's "Your Love Lifted Me" and she was so bad as part of that trio it was painful.

Jessica sang, oddly, "You Are So Beautiful", which is a guy's song. She sounded pretty but there was way too many theatrics in that version and those awful close-ups that showed us Jessica's pores didn't help her much.

But the judges love her, they saved her before she even was done her saving song and they praised her when she didn't deserve it.

I think she's too young and doesn't have near enough stage presence right now to be an American Idol. Skylar sings her heart out and any fool can see she loves to entertain. Jessica always looks like she's in pain.

And Phillip of two names, he was just awful He sang the Zombies song "Time of the Season" and he sounded like a Zombie. He also joined Joshua for "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and go with me here, Phillip shouldn't oughta be singing ballads.

So left we have Phillip, Jessica, Hollie and Joshua. I like Joshua and would have no problem with him winning this thing. By me Phillip ought to be sent home. He'll have a nice little niche music career, kind of like Daughtry. Jessica should not be the winner of this thing but I suspect she probably will.

I respect the votes of America and so it shall be.

Goodness it took about forever to get Elise out of there.

Not that, but of course, she wasn't a good singer. All of the singers about this time are good, every one of them are better than any EVER on "The Voice". But Elise had been on the bottom for so long.

Using that standard this should mean that Hollie and Joshua will likely be going home soon. As of this writing, the only remaining contender who hasn't been in the bottom three at least once is the fellow with the two names: Phillip Phillips.

The most recent performance round had the contenders singing a Queen tune as well as a song of their choice.

As for the stellar fashion of Randy Jackson, get a load of those shoes!

Jessica sang "Bohemian Rhapsody", a difficult tune I'd think for a girl to sing. But sing it she did so good on her.

Joshua sang "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and by me it was cruise shippy. However Joshua landed in the top two that week so America must have liked it.

Hollie sang "Save Me". Phillip sang "Fat Bottomed Girls" and Elise sang "I Want It All". I didn't recognize Hollie 's song as a Queen song but I did recognize that I liked it. I thought Phillip's performance was ho-hum, which is pretty much what I think of all of his performances. Elise, well it don't matter, she's gone.

Jessica sang a beautiful song "Dance With My Father" and she did it well. Skylar sang a song right up her alley "Tattoos on This Town". Steve Tyler had some nasty to say and sure enough Skylar was in the bottom two the following night. Skylar has been in the bottom tier once before so it wasn't a first. Still I can't help but think those judges are rigging this show for a Jessica win. And while I think Jessica's good enough to win it with her talent, it irks that she's getting such a nudge I don't think she deserves any more than anyone else.

Hollie sang "The Climb", which is a pretty song and she did it well. Alas, Hollie is not resonating with much of anyone else but me.

Joshua, well hey I predicted he could win this thing and I still think so. But he got so mercurial in terms of songs chosen and manner of singing that his singing began to blur in my ears.

As for the kid with two names, I don't think he's an American Idol. BUT he's good at his genre and he's been right in the running during this show's entire run. I see Phillip as belonging in a niche music market, a rock and roll Dave Matthews type of genre.

I would like for Hollie to win though this is doubtful. She's a little unsteady from time to time so far as her singing goes along but she's cute and does have a big voice.

As for Skylar, well it certainly wouldn't upset me if she won. She's pure country girl but I must remind once again, last year we had TWO singers of that same genre in the number one and two slot. Of course there's no rule that a country singer can't win American Idol every year but as Americans tend to do, they look beyond the recent for variety and diversity to the human ear. Thus I think Skylar has some strikes against her.

For now, I'm sticking with a Jessica win, a Joshua or Phillip second placer, Skyler somewhere in that top ten and maybe Hollie sneaks into the top five.

THE X FACTOR Season 1 discovered such diverse recording artists as winner Melanie Amaro, and finalists Astro, Chris Rene, Josh Krajcik, Marcus Canty and Rachel Crow, who have all signed major deals with Sony Music.

Got to laugh at that reference to Astro being a finalist. Well I suppose he was in the top 500 or so but he was basically a little brat, little-talented snot burger but whatever.

Also seems there's an entire web site devoted to Randy Jackson and his silly American Idol attire.

On performance night of 4/18/12, the then remaining 7 contenders sang two songs each, one from the past and one more recent. The song choices and singer for the "NOW" were:

“No One” - Alicia Keys-Elise
“I Believe” - Fantasia -Joshua
“Rolling In The Deep” - Adele-Hollie
“U Got It Bad” - Usher-Phillip
“Fallin’” - Alicia Keys-Jessica
“Bad Romance” - Lady Gaga -Colton
Born This Way” - Lady Gaga -Skylar

The song choices and singer for the "THEN" were:

“In The Midnight Hour” - Wilson Pickett-Phillip
“A Change Is Gonna Come” - Sam Cooke=Joshua
“September” - Earth Wind & Fire=Colton
“Son Of A Precher Man” - Dusty Springfield-Hollie
“Try A Little Tenderness” - Otis Redding-Jessica.
“Heard It Through The Grapevine” - Marvin Gaye-Skylar
“Let’s Get It On” - Marvin Gaye-Elise.

Hollie is my favorite this year but she's repeatedly been in the bottom three so I doubt she'll be around long. Hollie gave two great performances. Her Dusty Springfield "Son of a Preacher Man" was a rousing rendition full of vim and vigor. Hollie also did an Adele song, always a cautious action as is the warning. I think Hollie sounded every bit as good as Jessica.

Speaking of...Jessica was not booted off, my goodness thank God. For the judges love this child to the point of chastising us, the silly American voters who dial our phones for contenders besides their beloved Jessica. Make no mistake, Jessica is a fine singer and she seems nice enough. I don't think she should have been booted off. But Kelly Clarkson landed in the bottom three during her contest as have a few others who eventually went on to win. I don't recall the judges of any prior year getting all in a tizzy when a contender got voted off, I don't think Simon Cowell would have had anything to do with the hysteria of these three judges over Jessica Sanchez.

Phillip continues to sing the same tune. It's a good song but he needs to croon or rap or something else.

Elise continues to not impress, continues to be in the bottom three, continues to somehow hang in there. Anybody thinks Elise is going to be the next American Idol I got a bridge to sell, cheap.

Joshua is a great singer, I'm serious. But his song renditions are sometimes so over the top that he seems to lack a genre and lyrical home. I really believe he has it to win this thing but, alas, along with Hollie and Colton, he was in the bottom three.


It was Colton who finally got the boot in this year's American Idol and it was his time. He wasn't the next American Idol but he was a very good singer and entertainer. May he have a fine future in music in some form and fashion.

Skylar will not likely win this thing but she's cute, knows her genre, does it well and has a great smile.

Speaking of dress, dear Lord I know they got a famous fashion guy in there revamping the contenders but I think he does a horrid job. That thing he put on Skylar this past week, see picture below, was perfectly awful, very wrong for that child. And what the hey with the orange trash bag on Elise? Give Phillip credit, he can always be found in gray sweater and jeans and some things do not change.

My predictions for now:

3-Phillip
4-Joshua
5-Hollie

Jessica Crowned Queen of All by American idol 2012 Judges

Goodness what's their obsession with Jessica Sanchez?

It was home town week featuring songs from 2010 or later. There were some great performances.

Randy: I love the arrangement. What you did tonight is you set the bar really high. Dude, that was superb. The control. The scatting. You did an a amazing job. You sleighed the biggest fish of the night.


J-Lo: That was really beautiful. You were really digging. You have an amazing opportunity to take America on a ride. You can show us something we've never seen!


Steven: When you sing I forget where I am. You slay it every time.

Above the gratuitous comments by the judges re Jessica's performance of some dreary song by Jazmine Sullivan, "Stuttering".

Heh.

The following elimination night, their beloved Jessica landed in the very bottom.

And like the RINOS of the GOP Blue Blood elites, the judges saved Jessica and didn't even make her finish her song!

Randy lambasted us like the boobs in Delaware who voted for Christine O'Donnell over the traitor Mike Castle. He told us "we " need to vote for the very best.

All of America voted Jessica Sanchez out but these judges are waaaaay smarter than us.

It's not that I think Jessica is a bad contender and, indeed, I considered her a real challenge to win this thing.

Now, all bet are off the table. First off, Americans might get a bit of an attitude at how those judges flipped them the bird for N OT voting for Jessica. Remember, it's not that they voted her OFF, it's just that they voted for other singers that they liked better.

What's Randy saying here? That we have to vote for who HE says we should vote for?

The three bottom contenders consisted of Jessica, Elise and Joshua. Elise is no surprise at all. She's been in the bottom three three times now and is not likely to hang in much longer. She's okay but seriously , she's not going to win this thing, give it up.



As for Joshua, well that's a bit of a surprise. Though Joshua too has been in the bottom three, I think he's a very good singer but his performances are spotty.

Steven: You can sell a song like a work of art.

J-Lo: So dynamic. So much energy. You're the umph!

Randy: Unbelievable performance. You've got the vocals, you've got the performance. I he really gotsta have it!

Once again, with the prognosticator skills of Dick Morris, those judges evidently got it all wrong. America didn't fall in love with Joshua's rendition of "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars.

There are a couple of other standouts in this group of contenders and phooey on Randy, phooey on J-Lo, and a great big phooey on that perverted creep Steven Tyler.

Skyler gave a great performance of a Kelly Pickler song. Hollie is a cutie I quite adore. She sang "Perfect" by Pink and I was so impressed that I am going to download the song for my Ipod. And let's not forget Colton who played the piano and has been doing great of late.

So who the hell are those judges to demand we vote for who THEY like? The idea is that It's American Idol, America votes, our choices are respected.

I think the judges might have irreparably hurt Jessica with their snotty attitude and frankly, I hope so.

Because I'm an American and I don't like people telling me what I should and shouldn't like. And for now, I can't stand the young stuck-up Jessica.

I'm still rooting for Hollie though I know the odds are against her. I think Skylar is one great, energetic and very likeable performer. I never paid Colton much mind but he's been doing a great job and has earned my second look.

Jessica, tell those judges they did you no favor last week.

America Does Not Like Falsetto

It was a "back to the 80's" night on American Idol 2012. As an added, and pleasant surprise, the remaining eight performed duets. This musical feat became only possible in that the eight remaining contenders on the night of 4/4/12 were evenly divided between males and females.

Elise and Phillip performed "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". Jessica and Joshua sang "I Knew You Were Waiting for Me". Hollie and Deandre sang "I'm So Excited". Hollie sounded especially good in the duet. But the best duet of all was definitely Skylar and Colton who sang what I consider a normally silly song, "Islands in the Stream". This song was right up Skylar's alley and along with Colton she knocked it out of the park.

As for their solo performances, it was, as if often the case, a mixed bag. Deandre did his falsetto thing with Debarge's "I Like It". Which I did NOT like.

Elise sang Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Life Is", a song I do quite like. I thought she did an okay job though Steven Tyler was pretty adamant that it was a very bad rendition by his measure. Elise did not begin to meet her rendition excellence of "Whole Lotta Love" the prior week.

Phillip kept to his rock roots with "That's All" by Genesis, and did a good job at it, though this is not my genre.

Joshua, a contender whose performances tend to wobble from week to week, sang Simply Red''s "If You Don't Love Me By Now", a good choice, performed quite adequately for him.

Jessica, a judge favorite, loves to tackle the big songs and she went with Whitney Houston's "I Want to Know". Jessica's done better but she's got a big voice and she did a good job.


Hollie, my cutie favorite, sang "What a Feeling" and she was absolutely creamed by the judges. Well it was a bit pitchy but it's a big song and Hollie is so cute.

Colton performed a Cyndi Lauper tune, "Time After Time", an interesting choice and he did a good job.

Skylar sang out of her genre for the first time, "The Wind Beneath My Wings". She looked beautiful and I think she did a nice job but Skylar, as always, shines when she does country.

Here's something that can go to the bank as concerns American Idol: way out song genres are not likely to get the votes. American Idol tends to appeal most to middle America and rule number one, forget rap music, just forget it. Rap might be a genre that deserves its time and space but so long as folks in Iowa are calling in the votes a rap singer will most likely never take the title of American Idol. So too that falsetto thing of Deandre though Deandre is a nice enough fellow and enjoyed his talent. The falsetto thing is a niche genre and not likely to be the lilt in an American Idol's voice.

The bottom three last week Elise, Hollie and Deandre. Deandre got his walking papers.

Elise has been in the bottom three now for three weeks. Look for her to be sent packing soon. Hollie, my cutie fave, is not likely to be around much longer either.

For now I see Jessica as the favorite to win with a real challenge by Phillip. Joshua, if he can get a control on his voice, could be a long shot winner.

As promised, we have another Randy Jackson fashion update.  Randy's pin looks like something I'd crochet for a crafty yarn project for my kitchen table.
