Also, Dance War 08 has a winner. We've got info on this PLUS the 12 Celebrity Dancers to be featured on this year's ABC "Dancing With the Stars".

Effective this week, the review, unique pics and videos you’ll find nowhere else on the Internet, and would-be Idols eliminated will be posted on Thursday nights immediately AFTER the elimination show. The review posted will be of the prior contests earlier that same week and will include my guess as to who will be sent home.

Which might be an incorrect guess, mind you, as the review et al will have been written/compiled BEFORE the elimination round. Thus the contender eliminated will be posted on this Blog right after it is announced so click on in for the first result.

”American Idol” 2008- Let’s Look At the Final 24

CLICK HERE FOR Pics of Top 24 American Idol 2008 Finalists

At the bottom of this review there is a remix of some of the best and worst performances of the top 24 of “American Idol” 2008.

The top 24 contenders, four of which have already been sent home as of this writing, are a compendium of the mediocre to the spectacular. This year the contenders are allowed to play an instrument as they sing and a few did.

I have some issues with a few of the better contenders in that they are, well they’re not American. They are not American at least by birth. One of the most promising female contenders had visa problems during an earlier tryout but why would a citizen need a visa?

We’ve got the male equivalent of Jordin Sparks, weird names and male hair styles that defy and baffle. There’s a plus size model in the competition and a few real female beauties.

On 2/19/08, the final 12 male contenders competed. The theme was music of the sixties, right up my alley.

David Hernandez sang “Wait Till the Midnight Hour”. The judges rather liked this young man but by me, he was rather forgettable.

Next a fellow who goes by the name of Chikezie performed “I Love You More Today Than Yesterday”. First, that name is totally dumb. It looks and sounds like a chicken’s name, maybe a fried chicken restaurant. Second, this is a guy who was cut last year right before the final 24. Third, he definitely should have avoided that ridiculous red suit.

Simon, always the curmudgeon, hated Chickezie’s suit AND singing. Simon referred to this contender as “Jacuzzi” and that’s just one problem when your name is Chikezie.

Chikezie montage

David Cook sang “Happy Together”. The judges liked David and by me, he might make the top ten.

Jason Yeager came up and sang “Moon River”.

Here’s a rule of thumb I offer for all would-be American Idols: do not EVER sing “Moon River” except perhaps as part of a final five performance once your singing bona fides are established.

For to sing such a tune from the start almost automatically labels the singer as a lounge lizard, a cruise ship crooner, a leisure suited Karaoke balladeer. The judges did not like Jason, who might be a fine singer save for his bad choice of music. I predicted, so my notes indicate, that Jason would be eliminated this go round. He was not so let’s hope Mr. Yeager is a little more picky with his song choices.

David Archuleta is the male to watch during this competition. I consider David this year’s male Jordin Sparks. He is young like Jordin, 17 years of age. He has that big toothy smile and smooth skin of the young. He’s got a terrific voice and all in all, he’s a total package. David sang “Shop Around” and was liked by all of the judges.

Robbie Carrico sang “One Is the Loneliest Number” and he did a nice job. However, somebody tell Robbie to lose the head scarf. What’s up with that? The judges also liked Robbie. He’ll be around for a few more rounds I predict.

Danny Noriega sang an Elvis tune “Jailhouse Rock”. Well here’s another suggestion to all future AI contenders, avoid all Elvis tunes until later in the contest. It’s not that Danny did a bad job. It’s just that Elvis tunes so early in the competition make one think of Elvis impersonators and that image does not lend itself to visions of a future American Idol.

Noriega performed okay and he’s a cutie pie although I whisper softly that Danny might prefer boys to girls but that’s just me. And not that there’s anything wrong with that. He’s got the most gorgeous eyes of all the contenders and with a better choice of songs he could make the top ten. Simon called the performance “grotesque” but I think that’s a bit much.

Speaking of Simon Cowell the judge, I notice that he’s particularly brutal this early in the series. Perhaps he’s been just as brutal around in this time in the prior series but I hadn’t noticed. One must assume that Simon wants to pound into the dewy eyed contenders the error of their ways that they may straighten up and fly right real quick.

We move on to Luke Menard, a fellow who gave a really bad performance at least as this amateur music critic sees it. Luke sang “Echos of my Mind” and the judges didn’t care for Mr. Menard either. I predicted that Luke would be one of the fellows eliminated which he was not. I don’t think Luke will last much longer.

Montage of Guys from Top 24 American Idol 2008

Colton Berry was a young man who also sang an Elvis song-“Suspicion”. This Elvis tune does not bring Elvis impersonators immediately to mind but still, it’s an Elvis tune. Colton WAS sent home on elimination night-2/21/08. Simon and I both took exception with Colton’s hair, which Simon thought was more on Colton’s mind than his singing.

Another fellow who didn’t make it through, Garrett Haley, sang “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”. Now there’s a song with a bunch of potential. Instead Haley sang the entire tune softly, sweetly, punctuated with his own divine head of curly hair which surrounded his face like a halo.

Simon said this guy looked like he needed some time outside in the sunshine for his ghostly pallor. America voted Haley off first vote and it was a good decision.

Jason Castro was the only guy who played an instrument, a guitar. Jason sang “What a Day for a Daydream” and this guy has possibilities.

Although, first thing, what’s with that hair? So okay, perhaps those horse-hair braid like things are all the rage and if any of the contenders can pull it off it would be Mr. Castro. Jason has a very nice voice capable of a fine falsetto. He manages to do well with that guitar and I can see Jason in the top ten, perhaps the top five, as someone new, different and fresh.

Finally Michael Johns, one of the older contenders in this contest, performed “Light My Fire” and there’s a tune that’s a challenge. Mr. Johns is from Australia and again, I wonder, should an Australian be an American Idol? Make no mistake, Michael is very good and America is a land of opportunity as we welcome them to our shores.

If that bit about being Australian doesn’t alienate the voting public, I can see Michael Johns winning this thing.

The top twelve females performed on 2/20/08 and by me there’s a few formidable contenders.

The evening began with Kristi Lee Cook who sang “Rescue Me”. I think you need a pretty big voice to belt out that tune and Kristi was at best average by American Idol standards. I understand she was very sick the night of that performance; indeed many of the females had been bitten by some nasty flu bug. Kudos to all of them because I could not see any sign of sickness in any of them our here in audience land.

The judges all lambasted Miss Cook and I pegged her as one who would be sent home first try. She was not but I’ve doubts about how long Kristi will last.

Joanne Borgello is a plus-sized model, a very pretty young woman with a so-so voice. Joanne performed “Say a Little Prayer”, Dionne Warwick’s famous tune. Joanne made a fatal mistake and I will once again, like I do every year, post this warning to all contenders who read this Blog. And don’t kid yourself, plenty of them do, all searching the Internet furiously for what is being said about them. Do not EVER admit to a bad performance.

In fact Joanne was voted off on the following elimination night and by me she deserved to be around for a couple more shows at least. But as soon as Simon and to a lesser extent the other judges critiqued Joanne’s performance as only adequate, Joanne immediately went weak and said she would do better next time.

DON’T DO THIS.

Even if your performance was worse than the worst Karaoke singer, keep saying you did your best, that you’re proud of your performance. Don’t reinforce negative criticism in the voting public’s mind. Which is not to say you should ignore criticism but there’s no rule that says you gotta admit to a bad performance in front of millions of people.

Next Alaina Whitaker sang “I Love You More Today Than Yesterday”. I think Alaina has a real nice voice although I noticed she had very poor timing on her breaths. The judges liked Alaina as a rule and Paula particularly noted Alaina’s fantastic ending, which is part of the video remix below.

Amanda Overmyer is allegedly a nurse who rides a Harley and here’s one to watch out for. Amanda has a deep, throaty voice and this could very well be a good year for Amanda’s song style. Miss Overmyer does, of course, like to belt out Janis Joplin tunes, what with her voice and style so similar. Amanda performed “Baby Please Don’t Go”. Frankly I thought this wasn’t as good a performance as I’d seen in the initial tryouts and in Hollywood. Simon thought Amanda was all over the place and so did I.

Amy Davis is 25% Japanese with a beautiful set of eyes to match. Amy sang “Where the Boys Are” and it was the worst performance of the night. The song was pitchy, breathy, weak and lackluster.

In fact, Amy Davis was sent home the following elimination night and this was a good choice. Amy looked good but her voice just wasn’t going to cut it.

Brooke White is perhaps the prettiest female of them all. She is married and employed as a Nanny. Brooke sang “Happy Together” and while I’m not convinced that Brooke will win this thing or make the top five, I do see her as being around for a few more weeks.

Alexandra Lushington performed “What Goes Up Must Come Down”, a virtually undistinguished performance as I heard it. Randy loved the performance and I began to wonder if I missed something. Simon intensely disliked the performance so it wasn’t just me.

Montage of Girls from Top 24 American Idol 2008

Next up Kady Malloy sang “Groovy Kind of Love”. Kady has a nice deep voice but the judges lambasted her for being “too controlled”. Simon went so far to call the performance the “night of the living dead”. Well it wasn’t that bad.

Asia ‘H Epperson sang a Janis Joplin tune, a bit of a nervy choice what with Amanda Overmyer practically owning Janis Joplin in this contest. Asia sang “Take Another Piece of My Heart” and she gave one great performance. Asia is definitely one to watch in this contest and yes, I can see her winning this thing. And her earrings are amazing.

Ramiele Malubay is just a little thing. She sang the Dusty Springfield tune “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” and I loved it. I do think that Ramiele needs to be mindful of her damn eyes and open them up once in a while when she sings. The judges all liked Ramiele, one declaring hers the best performance of the night. Ramiele should make it to the top five, at the least the top ten. She could win this thing.

Syesha Mercado sang “Tobacco Road”. Syesha is another contender that could go far. My only caveat about this performance is that Syesha came close, very, very close, to screaming.

She needs to show us that powerful voice but be careful of that line which separates grand control with singing mania.

Carly Smithson is definitely one to watch for. Carly is another AI 2008 contender who is from another country, in her case, Ireland. Carly does not have any sort of accent. She and her husband run a tattoo shop in Santa Barbara and Carly’s arms are decorated with tattoos. They look very nice on her, however.

Carly sang “Shadow of Your Smile” and covered her tattoos this first night of performances. I could swear at one point Carly forget the correct words.

IF someone held a gun to my head and commanded me to name the winner of this year’s American Idol, I’d choose Carly Smithson.

Dance War 2008

So this rather unusual dance reality show is over and Bruno Tonoli and Carrie Ann Inaba gave it their best.

To my complete surprise, Bruno’s team won.

Also to my surprise, I now understand why ABC even bothered with this lackluster dance series. For on the finale when the winning team was announced, the 12 beginning dancers for ABC’s famous “Dancing With the Stars” 2008, scheduled to begin on 3/17/08, was announced. I’ve got pics and info on all of them below.

American Idol 2008 enters its next phase this week. The final city visited, Atlanta, is featured in this post, the winners, the losers, those who wear snakes and the identical twins.

Also, Dance Wars 08 continues and Bruno's not doing so well.

A Book review, "The Doctor, The Murder, The Mystery" by Barbara Damato.

I think he killed his wife, the author thinks he did not. I do not think the state had near enough evident to convict.

Many of you will remember this case.

America Idol 2/5/8-Atlanta

According to the hype, it was Atlanta, Georgia that produced such Idol greats as Fantasia and Clay Aiken.

So on the last two episodes of the Idol traveling series, 2/5/08 and 2/6/08, the group goes to Atlanta with various left over on the second night.

Below, a few pic montages from the last two traveling audition series for 2008 and below this, a video remix of those last two nights.

Dance War 2008

This might well be this Blog’s last review of this series save the eventual winner.

Why?

I am bored. The show is boring, in fact.

First, the concept of Bruno and Carrie Ann critiquing their own as well as the opposing team’s performance seems somehow unreal. Most reality shows of our day feature a panel of judges that, on the surface, are impartial. The notion of judges who have invested time, talent and hope in the performers, and then having these same people doing the judging…well it’s an edge that is lost somehow.

Also, the performers are really not the best. I understand it’s a reality show and the notion is that the contenders might not be the best but with time and an audience vote, the best will be ascertained.

I don’t buy this because this series has had some very, very lame performers. Again, yes the concept is that the contenders must be able to sing AND dance. The two talents required might reduce the level of talent but I am just so sorry but some of those singers should not have been allowed to perform on live TV.

Finally, this notion that one of the judges should get to choose who goes on with their team, well once again this goes against the grain of the reality TV competition as we know it. Audience voters generally vote against or for a PERFORMER, not a team. I think this concept tends to dilute audience performer loyalty, a mainstay of reality competition TV.

Poor Bruno gets voted down every week and I start to wonder what happens when Bruno’s team is reduced to one dancer and who knows, maybe Carrie Ann’s team will have its full compliment of six dancers.

Below some pic montages of the last episode of 2/4/08, and below this a video remix of all the performances.

Cover of The Doctor, The Murder, The Mystery book

"The Doctor, The Murder, The Mystery" by Barbara Damato

….the true story of Dr. John Branion murder case.

I remember this case vaguely. It occurred back in 1967 and involved a wealthy doctor and the mysterious shooting of his wife.

The doctor was Dr. John Branion, a wealthy doctor married to Donna Branion. Donna was also from a wealthy medical family.

First things first. The contention of this novel is that Dr. Branion was innocent. Right there I have issues.

For as much as I love the True Crime genre of literature I usually steer away from any True Crime book which take the position that the story inside promotes the innocence of the subject.

Sure, innocent people go to jail and probably way more often than we’d like. I’d argue, with no handy stats save my instinct, that more guilty people are released than innocents jailed.

Author Barbara Damato didn’t convince me a whit that Dr. Branion was innocent of murdering his wife. She did, however, totally convince me that the state did not adequately prove its case.

Donna Branion was killed on 12/22/67 at an estimated time between 11:00 am and noon. The timing of the activities of John Branion on that day is crucial and by me, there’s just no way Dr. Branion could have killed his wife.

First, there’s plenty of proof that Dr. Branion was with patients up until 11:30 am. There’s also proof that he picked up his son afterward at nursery school and in addition, stopped by to pick up a family friend for lunch. Dr. Branion then came home, found his wife dead in the laundry room. Police were called at 11:58.

There’s all sorts of extraneous, conflicting and confusing information regarding timelines, including a neighbor who swears to have heard gunshots at 11:20, a time when Dr. Branion was known to be at the hospital, still seeing patients.

But even without this, we’re talking 28 minutes for Dr. Branion to get to the nursery school, pick up his son, put on his coat and boots, then stop by the friend’s real estate office only to be told that the friend was too busy for lunch. After all this we are told that Dr. Branion somehow got home, shot and killed his wife, who fought back mightily with clues from the Branion bedroom to the laundry room where Donna was found dead.

All this within 28 minutes of time?

The prosecution went with this time frame, to the point of having a test driver actually drive this route including all stops. It was possible but close, damn close. We don’t know if the prosecutors tested putting boots on a young child or not.

The author played with this timeline for the entire book and I understand why.

Only at some point later, much later in the book, does the author mention that prosecutors told her, off the record, that they weren’t convinced that it was Dr. Branion who shot his wife. Some of the prosecuting team believed that John Branion hired someone to kill his wife .

Well this is important. Although I’d argue that there’s something a bit unjust about prosecuting a case that you don’t believe which had to be the case if one is to believe those prosecutors.

I don’t buy that tight timeline at all but I don’t know why Dr. Branion couldn’t have come home earlier in the day, killed his wife, then come home later to…SURPRISE…find her dead. The author never deals with this possibility, perhaps assuming that since Dr. Branion was on duty at the hospital all morning that it was an ironclad alibi. Perhaps a reader out there somewhere knows more about this case because hey, doctors get breaks and such. Seems to me a doctor could just excuse himself, needs some fresh air, gotta run down to pharmacy to explain a prescription. Hospitals are big places.

And Dr. Branion DID live quite close to that hospital so why couldn’t he have went home and killed his wife then back to work, all busy being seen by anybody, being seen by the nursery school folks, stopping to pick up that family friend who had told Dr. Branion earlier that she wouldn’t be able to join him and Donna for lunch?

Further, the fine Dr. Branion had been having a secret affair and come on, dead wives, secret lovers, hey…not a good combination. The author obviously has great affection for Dr. Branion and his third wife, Shirley Hudson. It is nonetheless, author affection notwithstanding, that Shirley Hudson was a great big elephant in the room in terms of a motive for Branion to kill his wife.

And let it be noted that Dr. Branion did take off for overseas and was on the loose in Africa for many years. John Branion associated with many questionable characters over the years, including a very close association with the Black Panthers.

Barbara Damato’s husband helped John Branion, who was finally bought to justice and thrown in the slammer, draft up many appeals.

None of them worked. John Branion got more help with proving his innocence than most of his co-criminals behind bars. Over and over, Barbara and her attorney husband filed appeals; appeals to the state, appeals to the feds.

Could EVERYONE really be wrong about Dr. John Branion?

Yes, this reader did not get convinced that John Branion did not kill his wife. I did become quite convinced that the state did not prove its case to any proud standard.

But Dr. Branion didn’t have a half bad life during his years on the lam. He hobnobbed with African despots and dictators and Shirley Hudson was able to join him. Shirley and John had a child together, a daughter.

Donna Branion, however, died quite young and her son grew up without ever knowing his mother.

”American Idol” 2008 Goes to Omaha and Miami

Before we continue, here’s a smirk. I am a bit of a talk radio freak although, heh, check out this Blog, I like televised reality shows and thanks to the miracle of DVR, I can do both!

So there’s this radio talk show guy, replaced Drudge on Sunday nights and I really like him. Last night he’s on the radio all upset over John McCain, as am I folks, and lambasting the silly American public all busy watching “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” and paying no attention to the presidential campaign.

Someone needs to tell this fellow that hey, we can walk and chew gum at the same time out here in la-la land. I am a fervent fan of “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” and duh, there’s no more dedicated political junkee than my own wise self, not that I’m especially proud of my obsessions. Everyone should have their own special list of obsessions is how I see it.

Anyhow, what with the Super Bowl (what a game…wow…hey, on occasion I watch football too!), all the primaries and what-not, pretty much no one’s paying attention to “American Idol” 2008. Thus I remain out here, watching that lying John McCain steal the Republican nomination whilst also keeping up with the candidates for the next “American Idol” and just for good measure, checking in on the Super Bowl.

There was nothing spectacular about the AI team’s visit to Omaha or Miami but yon ladies and gems, below some pic montages and below this, a video remix of the best of the candidates from both cities.

”Dance Wars” 2008

Even with the pressure of ever-monitoring the presidential race, the Super Bowl, and “American Idol” 2008, I still watch this rather unusual dance reality contest.

For the episode that aired on 1/28/08 had the first contender sent home. Bruno’s team lost that week’s show and Bruno had to eliminate one of his team.

Below, some pic montages and below this, a video remix of this episode. You gotta watch this remix because at the end there is featured two of the worst singers on the planet. Charity got the cut from Bruno.

Cover of Michigan Murders book

”The Michigan Murders” by Edward Keyes

Here’s a True Crime book written in 1976 and it was a bit of a time warp to read a story written so long before the advances in DNA and crime detection that makes investigating murders so much easier in this new century.

Seven women were murdered in Washtenaw county, Michigan, all in the vicinity of the University of Michigan. The perp’s name was James Armstrong and he was, like most serial killers, a fellow who looked as all-American as they come.

The book’s author was a collaborator in the famous book “The French Connection”. Thus while the book’s prose was accurate and properly punctuated, this was not a True Crime book with any “meat”.

Keyes did an okay job of detailing the investigation into the crimes, the trial, the legal stuff. I closed the book wishing I knew about James Armstrong, what made him tick, his family, his warped world.

This is the thing a True Crime writer SHOULD be doing. If I wanted to read a cut and dried tome about a crime and the subsequent investigation, I’d read “True Detective” for God’s sake.

Two words: Ann Rule.

"WITNESS-Amber Frey's story."

She did the right thing in turning in the fine Scott Peterson.

Did anyone ever teach this woman the art of birth control?

"Tainted Roses"

So here you have it. A truly AWFUL true crime book that I'm bothering to write a review on that readers be warned.

A murderer, Paul Mack...alias Sean Lanier, meets up with a recently divorced woman, sweet talks her into romance and marriage, then is exposed on "America's Most Wanted" to his new wife's horror.

Guess who his wife was? Margie Danielsen.

That's right. The book is written by the "victim" of Sean Lanier and so far as I'm concerned, this woman is a certified idiot.

The Summer Wind-George Anastasia

Anastasia is a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and attended the trial of Capano. His perspective on the reporting is distant and less personal than Rule?s account. If someone held a gun to my head and only had one choice to read about the nefarious Thomas Capano, I'd suggest they go with the Rule version. Maybe it's a woman thing, but Rule always brings that female insight often lacking in the prose of male true-crime writers. Nonetheless, Anastasia did a fine job and his skill as a writer is quite evident.

"Fatal Analysis" by Dr. Martin Obler and Thomas Clavin

A Book Review of a true crime book "Final Analysis" by Dr. Martin Obler.

It's a good true crime story about a serial killer, his shrink and efforts to stop the killing.

Only thing, although proclaimed to be true, I didn't believe a word of Obler's psychobabble nonsense.

It's almost a sin to classify this book as non-fiction.

Shattered" by Debra Puglisi Sharp

Also, a Book Review of a book by an author that promised me an interview but she didn't deliver. I read the book anyway, here's the review but I don't think much of people making promises they don't keep.

She was held hostage by a crack-crazed nut for six days, hog-tied and repeatedly raped and tortured until she finally got to the phone to freedom.

It's a compelling book, this "Shattered" by Debra Puglisi Sharp.

Too bad she's not a woman of her word for all her heroism.

"Unspeakable Acts" by Jan Worthington

A True Crime Book Review of "Unspeakable Acts". This book is more accurately a tome. Half of it could have been deleted. For this tale of two hippie doctors eliciting tales of abuse in a daycare center in the hysteria of the mid-80's is almost entirely fiction.

This is a great study of how the Lamestream Media creates a story from thin air.

"Missing Beauty"

A True Crime book review-"Missing Beauty" by Teresa Carpenter, tells the story of a very intelligent scientist who gets caught up in the world of prostitution, drugs...and murder.

"Unfinished Murder" by James Neff

A book review, "Unfinished Murder" by James Neff. The book title is indicative of a True Crime that is considered by many to be a killing crime not quite complete. He's a serial rapist and this is a story of his life and how he got caught.

2 BOOKS ON JONBENET RAMSEY-PERFECT MURDER, PERFECT TOWN-Lawrence Shiller, JONBENET BY DETECTIVE STEVE THOMAS

It was never my intention to become an expert on the Jonbenet Ramsey case, but given my complete and total absorption in the two books most recently read following the colon, I must say I'm pretty much up to snuff on all the players, suspects and victim: "Jonbenet" by Detective Steve Thomas; "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town" by Lawrence Schiller.

"Evidence of Love" by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson

I could not put this book down.

For if ever there were two couples so very, very odd while appearing for all the world to be so perfectly normal, it would be the Montgomerys and the Gores of Collin County, Texas.

Then there was the Methodist church and the strange preachers combined with weirdly devoted parishioners and oddball church-sanctioned "marriage counseling" that added to the reader's perception that this book HAD to be fiction; surely churches and normal people don't behave like this.

"A Wife's Revenge" by Eric Francis

A rather unique book review here. We've got "A Wife's Revenge" by Eric Francis. Coincidentally as I read this book this story of Susan Wright was featured on CBS' "48 Hours".

Thus we have video of this book's subject, a pretty woman who killed her husband in a most heartless and horrific manner.
